A 60-year-old woman was sexually assaulted as she sat in a city garden.

The victim was sitting near the toilets in Brighton’s Pavilion Gardens at about 8pm on Monday when a man who had been sitting next to her put his arm around her.

The man then tried to rape her before running away. Two women came to her aid when they heard her screams.

A 20-year-old man has been arrested nearby for attempted rape and remains in custody.
