A man has appeared in court after an aspiring boxer was stabbed in an early-morning attack.

Jerome Brown, 33, from Charles Street, Brighton, appeared at Brighton Magistrates’ Court yesterday afternoon.

He is accused of stabbing 22-year-old boxer Josh Douglas from Brighton on Sunday morning in Charles Street, Brighton.

He was charged with unlawfully and maliciously wounding another with intent to do him grievous bodily harm.

Following the attack in Charles Street, Brighton, Mr Douglas is being treated at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton for injuries which police described as not life-threatening but possibly life-changing.

At the same hearing yesterday, Mr Brown was also facing a second charge of unlawfully and maliciously wounding another with intent to cause grievous bodily harm four weeks earlier on Sunday, September 7, in Manchester Street, Brighton.

The charge relates to an attack on 20-year-old Czech national Ales Fiala, who was chased by his attacker following a dispute nearby.

Mr Brown had not been charged following the first incident on September 7.

He was arrested after the second incident last Sunday on suspicion of both assaults.

Mark Kateley, prosecuting for the CPS, said Mr Fiala was left with a brain injury after the September 7 attack while Mr Douglas suffered bowl wounds which mean he now has to wear a colostomy bag.

Mr Brown, who did not enter a plea, has been remanded in custody and will appear at Lewes Crown Court on October 30 where both charges will be dealt with.

Following the hearing DC Graham Lewenden of Sussex Police said: “We are still appealing for people to come forward with information.

“We are particularly interested in a brunette woman who might have intervened when the attack took place.”
