A MOTHER and son were both arrested on the same road for drunk driving – within 40 minutes of each other.

Sussex Police officers arrested the son on suspicion of being over the limit following a motorbike accident in the early hours of Saturday.

But they soon had the handcuffs out to arrest his mother, who drove to the accident site to see if he was okay but ended up also being arrested on suspicion of drunk driving.

Sussex Police were called to North Road in Bodle Street Green near Herstmonceux at 1.30am on Saturday after a 17-year-old biker was involved in an accident.

While the teenager was being treated by paramedics his concerned mother from nearby Dallington arrived at the scene to check on her son after hearing about the accident.

The 50-year-old was arrested on suspicion of drunk driving after getting behind the wheel for the three-and-a-half mile journey, which would have taken about eight minutes.

The pair have both now been bailed until later this month as police officers undertake further enquiries.

Sergeant Simon Kind of Uckfield Neighbourhood Response Team tweeted from the scene: “Road Policing Unit have arrested a drunk who’s crashed his motorbike.

“Drunk motorcyclist’s mum has driven to crash scene to check on him.

“She’s also drunk. Now two detained for drunk driving.”

A Sussex police spokesman said: “We were called at 1.30am on Saturday to a report that a motorcyclist had come off his bike in Bodle Street Green.

“Paramedics were called and a 17-year-old boy was treated at the scene before being arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.

“While he was being treated a woman arrived at the scene in North Road in a car and was spoken to by officers.

“At 2.10am the 50-year-old woman from Dallington was arrested on suspicion of drink-driving.”

The pair were both questioned by police before the 17-year-old boy was released on bail until November 16 and his mother was released on bail until November 22.
