A BIKER has been banned from the roads after he sped away from police while more than four times over the drink-drive limit.

Darren Moore, 43, almost crashed his motorbike in Southwick Tunnel heading east on the A27 before trying to evade police who pursued him when he got to Dyke Road, Brighton.

He swerved around a police car that tried to block him at the junction with Highcroft Villas, before eventually being arrested around the corner in Reigate Road.

Moore, of Windermere Crescent, Worthing, blew 152 microgrammes of alcohol per 100 millilitres of his breath - more than four times the legal limit of 35 microgrammes of alcohol.

He pleaded guilty to drink-driving and failing to stop for police, at Brighton magistrates on December 5, where he was banned from driving for 36 months.

He was also ordered to do 200 hours of community service and pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge.

Superintendent Jane Derrick said of the incident on December 4: "Moore was already endangering himself and other motorists with his erratic driving on the A27 but made things even worse by trying to escape from the officers following him.

"Drink-driving is totally unacceptable and we will not tolerate it in any form. If you see someone driving who you think could have been drinking, please call us on 999 so that we can prevent other people being put in danger."

Moore is the second person to be convicted of drink-driving this December during Sussex Police's month-long crackdown.
