Police are trying to uncover a mystery of how a stolen handbag came to be returned to its owner.
The green and beige spotted bag was stolen in a burglary at a house in Orchard Avenue, Worthing, overnight between December 9 and 10.
Intruders also took the keys to the householder's Ford Cougar and stole the car.
However, the distinctive Cath Kidston-labelled oilcloth, short handled handbag was returned to the doorstep overnight December 17, 18.
CID investigator Katy Wood said: "There was no note with it and we are keen to find out if someone found it and kindly tried to return it to its rightful owner. I would appeal to anyone who did so to get in touch with us as soon as possible, please."
Anyone with information should contact police on 101@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting serial 187 of 10/12.
