A 36-YEAR-old man who clipped a kerb while driving at speed is one of eight men arrested by police in the first week of new drug-driving legislation.

The man, who has been released on bail until April 24, was arrested after his car was seen to clip a kerb while travelling at speed at 8.20pm on March 6 in Station Road, East Grinstead.

He is among eight men arrested after being stopped and tested using new roadside equipment that indicates whether a motorist has taken cannabis or cocaine.

Also stopped under the new powers was a 35-year-old man arrested during a police operation in London Road, Brighton, at 9.35am on the first day of the legislation and a 24-year-old man from London arrested at about 5.30pm on March after his car was seen driving at speed in Bolnore Road, Haywards Heath.

A 19-year-old man from Saltdean was arrested at 12.50am on March 7 after he was stopped in Nuthurst Place, Brighton, while a 23-year-old man was arrested at Pease Pottage services at 3.45am on March 8 after officers saw his car being driven erratically.

Inspector Stewart Goodwin, of Surrey and Sussex roads policing unit, said: "The fact that we have made eight arrests because of the new legislation and equipment in just a week shows how much of difference the change in the law will make.”
