A MOTORCYCLIST remains in a serious condition after a smash between his red and white Yamaha and a green Volvo car.

At around 7pm on Friday (June 19) police were called to the B2102 Lewes Road at its junction with Mayfield Flat, Cross-in-Hand, near Heathfield, where the car and bike had been in collision.

The motorcyclist, a 24-year-old man from Heathfield, sustained serious but not life-threatening injuries and was taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton, where he remains in a serious condition.

The car driver, a 70-year-old man from Wadhurst, and his wife, also 70, who was the front seat passenger, were unhurt.

The man was arrested on suspicion of driving without due care and has been bailed until 28 July while enquiries continue.

Local road closures were put in place and diversions set up in and around Cross-in-Hand until the scene could be cleared.

Anyone who saw what happened or who may have seen either the car or motorbike being driven shortly before the crash is asked to email collision.appeal@sussex.pnn.police.uk or phone 101, quoting Operation Turbot.
