A MAN was attacked on a beach while visiting the wreck of a boat.

The 68-year-old Hastings man was attacked in St Leonards at a point just off Cinque Ports Way at about 7.20pm last Friday (July 3).

The attack, by an unknown assailant, came after he had visited the wreck of the Amsterdam, a Dutch East Indiaman which ran aground in January 1749.

He was struck on the back of the head, possibly with a weapon of some kind, causing him to fall to the ground. He suffered an open wound and swelling for which he was treated at the Conquest Hospital, St Leonards, before being allowed home.

Detective Constable Damien Cotgreave, of Hastings CID, said: "His attacker is currently unidentified.

"A white man in a blue top was seen running from the area and anyone who witnessed the assault or saw anyone acting suspiciously is asked to get in touch."
