A MOTORIST accused of driving at 50mph in a 20mph zone and failing to stop for police has been arrested.

Officers pursued a silver BMW which failed to stop for them in the Firle Road and Freshfield Road areas of Brighton ten days ago.

They observed the driver travelling at speeds of more than 50mph in a 20mph area.

The incident happened at around 6.20pm on Sunday May 8.

The vehicle stopped in East Drive shortly afterwards and the occupants went into Queens Park where officers arrested a man on suspicion of dangerous driving, driving with excess alcohol, and failing to stop for police.

After being interviewed he was released on bail until June while enquiries continue.

PC Laura-May Freeman appealed for witnesses to come forward.

She said: "If you saw this car being driven in that area on that evening, please contact us."
