CLEANERS have been subjected to abuse at a public toilet which has been repeatedly vandalised and set on fire.

Throughout June the toilets at The Salts recreation ground in Seaford have been vandalised, with lights, doors and access for disabled users all damaged.

Cleaning contractors were also victims of verbal abuse, and at the end of June a fire was lit inside one of the toilets which Seaford Town Council warns could have resulted in the loss of the entire facility.

This summer's property damage is the latest in a long line of incidents of vandalism across the recreation ground over the last two years.

The block is now closed from 3pm each day.

Lewes District Council, which manages the cleaning contract and maintenance of the toilets, said they have been left with no other choice.

Seaford Town Council is working with police to identify the vandals and is urging residents to be vigilant for similar activities.

Residents are encouraged to report any criminal behaviour witnessed in parks and around the town.

The council warns that repair costs are often met entirely by council tax payers, particularly if insurance claims are not cost effective for the level of damage caused.

Anyone with information or who sees vandalism taking place should call police on 101.
