TRIBUTES have been paid to two people killed in a hit and run crash as a 23-year-old appeared in court.

Flowers and notes were left on Eastbourne seafront remembering driver Richard Lewis-Clements, 46, and his front seat passenger Maria Smith, 48, who died on Friday evening.

One note read "I can't believe you're gone, rest in peace and thinking of you always."

Another said "taken so tragically and far too soon, now together forever."

Mr Lewis-Clements, of Gordon Road, Buxted, near Uckfield, and Ms Smith, of Edmund Close, Eastbourne, died at the scene.

Jodan Hunt, of Hobart Quay, is alleged to have been driving a Seat Leon car which crashed into the pair's Volkswagen Polo. He has been charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop after a crash.

The Seat Leon also collided with two parked cars - a BMW and an Audi A3 - in Bolsover Road just after 9.30pm on Friday. No-one else was hurt.

Hunt was remanded in custody at Brighton Magistrates' Court yesterday (Monday) and will appear at Guildford Crown Court on September 1.

Sergeant Dan Pitcher, of the East Sussex Roads Policing Unit, said: "I'd like to thank everyone who has assisted police with enquiries, however I am still very keen to hear from anyone who may have information concerning the collision, or who saw the Seat Leon prior to the collision.

Call police on 101.
