AN INVESTIGATION is continuing into the cause of a fire that saw hostel dwellers flee from their rooms yesterday.

Five fire engines were sent to Glenwood Lodge, a hostel next to the old Swift Sports shop in Grand Parade, Brighton at about 10.30am yesterday (November 21).

Crews extinguished the fire, which was in a basement toilet, and spent about an hour and a half cutting away debris and damping down.

Zoltan Herceg took these pictures at the scene.

A spokesman for Brighton and Hove City Council, which runs the hostel, said residents were evacuated safely.

He said: "Initial indications suggest the cause of the small fire to be electrical, but an investigation will take place to confirm what happened.

"No residents or staff were injured. There is some structural damage which is contained to a basement toilet and the toilet above. Staff and contractors are on site now to look at what repairs are needed.

"We are thankful to East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service and to the staff of Glenwood Lodge for the swift action taken."
