A man has been charged over a hit-and-run crash during a police pursuit which ended with an elderly pedestrian being killed.

Unemployed Gavin Dawes, 33, is accused of causing the death by dangerous driving of 78-year-old Jonos Sasvari in Brighton on January 10.

Mr Sasvari died at the scene after being hit by a Vauxhall Astra at the junction of St James's Street and Old Steine, near the city's famous Palace Pier, just after 10pm. The car was abandoned on nearby Madeira Drive.

Dawes, of Phoenix Rise, Brighton, is also charged with two counts of dangerous driving, and he will appear at Brighton Magistrates' Court on Friday, Sussex Police said.

A 35-year-old man remains on police bail until March 14 after being held on suspicion of dangerous driving, drink-driving, failing to stop for police and failing to report an accident.

The Independent Police Complaints Commission has launched an investigation into the circumstances of the police involvement.
