AN arson investigation has been launched after a fire was started in a church.

Crews were called to St John the Baptist in Kemp Town, Brighton, on Thursday night.

The fire damaged the sacristy and its roof and the church also suffered smoke damage.

Nobody was injured in the incident but the church is closed today and tomorrow.

This is so assessments can be carried out into the cause of the fire.

Tonight’s evening vigil mass at 6pm will take place in the parish hall.

Tomorrow’s 11am mass will be held in the table tennis club next door.

Fire crews were at the scene of the incident for more than two and half hours.
