SUSSEX Police have defended spending hundreds of pounds giving police cars a pride makeover after a barrage of criticism on social media.

The police force spent £750 of taxpayers’ cash on the decor of two police cars covered in rainbows and the words ‘Pride’.

One car will take part in Brighton and Hove Pride parade in August, while the other vehicle will attend Eastbourne, Hastings and London Prides. The livery will stay when the cars return to normal service.

A force spokeman said: “Sussex Police play a large role in the policing of Pride which is one of the biggest events in Brighton and Hove each year.

“We also feel it is important to promote LGBT equality within our local communities and build upon our relationship with those who come from minority groups.

“By taking part in the parade we hope to show that we are a supportive and open minded organisation who the people of Sussex can trust and have confidence in.”
