A SUSSEX-based volunteer group which aims to save lives through monitoring speeding drivers has won a prestigious national award.

Community SpeedWatch Online (CSW) received the inaugural Lord Ferrers Award for Technical Innovation at a ceremony held in London on November 28.

The awards recognise outstanding contributions to volunteering in policing.

CSW was nominated for the prize by Superintendent Chris Moon, head of the Surrey and Sussex Roads Policing Unit, for its creative use of technology.

Supt Moon said: “I’m delighted that the dedication, innovation and commitment of Community SpeedWatch Online, and our many hundreds of volunteers in Sussex, has been recognised through this prestigious national award. It is heartening to see local residents supporting the police and our road safety partners by becoming SpeedWatch members, and the co-ordination provided by CSW is ensuring this important initiative continues to grow.”
