A victim spoke anonymously to The Argus about her bullying ordeal.

The mixed-race Brighton girl, 14 at the time of the bullying, was the victim of a four-month hate campaign at the hands of racist yobs.

She was called names, taunted on the internet and even threatened with a knuckleduster after being surrounded by bullies.

Her mother said: “She developed a complex about how she looked because they kept calling her these terrible racist names.

“There was a group of 30 boys and girls who were a law unto themselves.”

The abuse started when the girl, a talented singer-songwriter, fell out with friends. In retaliation a 30-strong gang began calling her racist names when she walked to and from school, as well as sending text and online messages telling her to “go back to Africa”.

Her mum said: “They called her a black bitch on Facebook. When the school produced a brochure in which she featured, the gang defaced it and scawled racist names on her picture. They told her regularly she was going to get a kicking.”

At a funfair in Brighton the girl was set upon by a group of around 20 boys and girls. She was pushed around, taunted and forced to stand still while another girl brandished a knuckleduster on her fist.

Terrified, she managed to escape and ran into a grocer’s shop until her mother came to rescue her.

The bullies were twice reported to the police – but that didn’t deter them.

The girl was once sent home from school in a taxi because her mother feared for her safety.

The bully who scrawled the racist abuse on the school brochure was caught and excluded by the school.

But the girl’s mother said the school had “completely failed” to protect her daughter.

She said: “Why wasn’t the child expelled? Racism was clearly a serious issue at the school.”
