A SCHOOLBOY is celebrating soaring success after winning gold at the British Schools Trampoline Finals.

Lewes Old Grammar School’s Daniel Bradford, 13, was victorious in the Under 14 Boys Elite category at the national competition where he performed a testing routine that included a combination of double somersaults with twists.

The Year 9 student from Lewes had put himself through an intense five day training schedule at Uckfield’s Sky High Trampoline Gymnastics Academy in preparation for the final, having won both the regional and zonal round earlier this year.

More than 489 gymnasts from 90 teams and 160 schools took part in the event hosted in Newtownards, County Down, with gymnasts from across the United Kingdom.

Angmering, Bhasvic, Hailsham Community College, Sackville College and Uckfield Community Technology College (UCTC) were also among schools to send students to compete in Northern Ireland.

The results are just the latest in a long-running streak of sporting success for the boy who has been practising complex routines since he was just six.

Daniel has a long-running streak of sporting success. In 2017, he won four medals at the Trampoline Tumbling and DMT English Championships.

Proud mother Lynette Bradford said: “I’m thrilled to see how far Daniel has come – he worked really hard to get the gold and it’s so well deserved.

“We’re very grateful to his mentor and coach Gail Andrews for her support and to Lewes Old Grammar for accommodating Daniel’s budding sports career.”

Head coach Stella Jackson, of Sky High, said: “I was so proud of all our competitors for reaching the national schools finals.

“They all performed to the best of their abilities and the proof can be seen from the results.

“It is the icing on the cake that Daniel, Heidi and the UCTC girls took home the coveted title of British Schools Champions, along with a very large trophy for their schools.”

Murray Heywood, head of PE and games at Lewes old Grammar, said: “Daniel is an immensely talented gymnast so his continued success comes as no surprise.”
