MacMillan coffee morning is a nationwide event to raise money for those suffering with cancer. MacMillan is a phenomenal charity which not only help with the medical needs of those people suffering with cancer, but also looks at the social, emotional and practical impact cancer can have not only on the cancer sufferer, but their families too.

On Friday the 29th of September 2017, Steyning Grammar School and Sixth Form College, took part in this nationwide event. Students had been busy in the kitchen, baking up awesome creations in the form of cakes and biscuits to be sold to other hungry students to help raise money. A whole array of cakes was baked, ranging from a classic Victoria sponge to a donut cake!

Entertainment in the form of music Alevel students, performed from 10:05am-12:30pm with covers or their own songs. It was great being surrounded by amazing talent and eating a delicious cake at the same time. James O’brian, an Alevel music student at Steyning performed his own covers of “welcome to the jungle” by Guns n Roses and “the less you know the better” by Tame Impala on the guitar at the coffee morning and said, “It was a fun morning eating cake, however was a bit nerve racking performing because I get stage fright. But it was a good thing for a good cause.” Steyning Grammar raised over £900 for Macmillan coffee morning and is the 10th year of taking part in this national event. The money raised, contributed to the £15, 569, 851 that has been raised so far by Macmillan coffee morning 2017.

Overall, the coffee morning was a very enjoyable time. Being surrounded by cake and talented students was a great way to raise money for a very worthy charity. If you didn’t get involved this year, I highly recommend you get involved next year by hosting your own coffee morning. I mean, who doesn’t like cake, cookies and raising money?
