Pavilion Dollar Questions

26th April 1997, Giv us another! 26th April 1997, Giv us another!

I have decided to go a little off topic this week, and with the budget announced for March 24, have a look at the political picture in my part of Brighton. It is likely Gordon Brown’s confidant Mr Mandelson might tell him the most advantageous time to announce the bloody battle of General Election is, May 6th ..... possibly. It is apparent; Messer’s Cameron and Brown will be paraded live on TV in a US style election debate scenario, with possibly David Dimbleby in middle with bow tie and dress shirt. So as to make these discussions truly memorable bouts. I expect Nick Clegg might be allowed to shout contradicting statements from the wings.

I don’t expect the Brighton Centre, The Dome, The Hanbury Ballrooms, or the old Co-op in London Road, will be selected as the venue for one of these epics. However, since our Pavilion MP Mr David Lepper, is standing down after 13 years of fairly decent service, we are to have a new kid on the block.

It is, unless of course some Independent or obscure, has other ideas, likely to be a lady.

The four runners are; Nancy Platts , Labour; Charlotte Vere,Conservative; Caroline Lucas , Green; and Berni Milam, Lib Dem.

As a constituent, I am concerned just how much our new MP may be able to connect with and be helpful towards your common or garden Brightonian. I have never been a fan of a political party thrusting their latest superstar in to the next available or vacant parliamentary seat. Whether it be a by -election or determined by resignation, retirement etc. Think back to, the Dr David Bull fiasco not to mention DVD. (David Van Day) Although I have always voted Tory (that’s what ex council estate boys do) I am not so sure this time.

I want see just how ‘Brighton’, our famous four are. So I have sent them all a Brighton Quiz.

Three of the these ladies have answered all the questions. I will let you know how they did early next week, until then , How will you do?

1 Name the road that connects Surrey Street to Queens Road?

2 How old is Volks Railway?

3 What used to occupy the Big Yellow Storage warehouse on the corner of Coombe and Lewes Roads?

4 What percentage of the time is the maternity unit at RSCH closed, due to high number of admissions, lack of resources and available staff?

5 What is Brighton’s tallest building?

6 Which colourful violinist was born in Brighton?

7 What is the parking restriction criteria for Zone A?

8 What date did Albion play their last game at the Goldstone?

9 How much cash did Brighton and Hove Council recently give to shore up the deficit in Pride’s finances?

10 How much is the deficit in Brighton and Hove Councils budget to repair potholes and maintain salt provisions?

11 What happened just east of the Palace Pier on 17TH May 1980?

12 Name the 11 railway stations in the built up area of Brighton and Hove?

13 Which month of the year does Brighton racecourse have its big three day meeting?

14 Which famous poet and writer has an East Brighton Primary school named after him?

15 Which is the only bus service routed via Preston Street?

16 Where was the last venue for an Ice Rink in Brighton?

17 Which grocer used to be MP for Hove?

18 What is approximately 1320 yards long and runs from Freshfield Way to Elm Grove?

19 Who was Brighton’s Cheeky Chappy?

20 How long has David Lepper been MP for Brighton Pavilion?

Back with funny, anecdotal and beautifully observed Albion fun on Monday!

No, it will still be me writing it!

Quite a simple choice for the Brighton voter; do you want a change of Prime Minister or not ?

If yes, you have no choice but to vote Conservative.

If no, you have no choice but to vote Labour.

No problems exist in Brighton that a vote for any other Party can provide a solution to.

Sorry Gubbins. That's Hobson's Choice. I am no fan of Brown but even less of Tory Boy Cameron and his Eton chums. Think I'll abstain this time.

Well one more Labour or Tory MP isn't going to make any difference to anyone is it ? But we could make history here in BPav by electing the UK's first Green MP, and that would send ripples of surprise and shock through the system, which quite frankly needs a kick up it's backside. Until the voting system is reformed however, we'll never get what we actually vote for. But a Green MP would be a refreshing alternative to business-as-usual

Love the quiz Tim. Well done for having the initiative to present them with this.
Politicans are far too self-serving in my opinion - nice to remind them who they are actually meant to be working for - and where!

1. In my day it was known as "Crunch Island Villas".

2. The Volks Light Railways was built by Horatio X. Volk in 1994, and was first ridden on by Edwina Currie.

3. Furious students.

4. It is closed 98% of the time. It is possible to enter the closed building through a secret tunnel from Sussex Square.

5. The Palace Pier, that time it got caught in a storm and tipped up on its end. Everyone fell out of the Crazy Mouse but fortunately their fall was cushioned by the candyfloss and dough nuts that fell from the little stalls at the foot of the pier. Thank goodness!

6. Robert Maxwell. God rest his dear departed soul.

7. I have raged against this parking restriction with the local council, and again and again, "Mary Mears" writes back to me saying that there is no way a horse is a motor vehicle. I agree with her! But will they stop ticketing him? Alas no. He is easily hurt and the tickets tug at his coarse hair as I remove them.

8. It took place at some point in 1066, I am not sure when. I know they had rushed up the country to take on the Vikings, and then returned to battle with the French at Goldstone. Great days!

9. A hundred thousand pounds.

10. A hundred thousand pounds.

Kings Cross St Pancras. Bucket 'o Veal Station. Old Man's Withered Foot Station. Manchester Picadilly.

13. This is a trick question. The 29th April only takes place once every four years. This is known as a 'Leap Year'.

14. Dorothy Stringer.

15. The Preston Street Bus, known locally as "The Tremendous and Deep Growling Sound".

16. Many of the streets and roads during December and January.

17. Norman Tebbitt.

18. A collosal snake.

19. Steve Ovett.

20. A thousand years.

I wish you the most of luck in getting the answers you desire. I hope the ladies have the trivial pursuit knowledge to win the quiz! Myself and my Mighty Horse are filled with anticipation and bated breath!

I don't know about the others but it was the local party members that voted for Caroline Lucas to be the Green Party candidate in Brighton Pavilion - she wasn't parachuted in since that day she has lived here and been part of the community.

There is a real chance to make a difference here in Brighton - if we elect the first Green MP. The other candidates are both just more of the same.
