Councillors award themselves pay rise

Senior politicians awarded themselves an inflation-busting pay rise in the face of fierce criticism.

Members of Conservative-controlled West Sussex County Council rubber-stamped hefty increases in their allowances at a meeting on Friday.

They believe the new settlement - which comes after ten years of tax hikes in the county - represents value for money after they rejected the introduction of a £200,000 pension scheme.

Those already enjoying the largest allowances within the organisation have benefited most, with leader Henry Smith seeing his annual remuneration increase from £26,523 to £29,394 - a rise of 11 per cent on last year.

Cabinet members will pocket £18,283 - up by 14 per cent - while three non-executive committee chairmen will pocket £8,375 - a 27 per cent rise.

Tax-payers have seen their bills go up by 150 per cent since 1993.

The decision was taken despite an independent panel's recommendation to freeze any increases for the next financial year.

Campaign groups branded the decision an "insult to the people of West Sussex".

Coun Smith, who dedicates 60 hours a week to council duties, argued that the increases merely keep allowances in line with those enjoyed by other similar-sized councils.

And while maintaining that being a councillor should remain officially a voluntary role, Coun Smith denied claims of greed by arguing that he and fellow cabinet members could earn far more in private sector roles.

He said: "The first thing to point out is that the remuneration panel's recommendations have been rejected before.

"They recommended that West Sussex county councillors should receive a pension which would have cost the council £200,000 and we rejected that.

"These increases brings us in to line with councils of comparable sizes in this region and I think all of us felt that was the right thing to do.

"I spend around 60 hours a week on my duties as leader of the council and if I was to do take a role with similar responsibilities within the private sector the salary would be far higher.

"I absolutely think being a councillor should be a voluntary role though. The taxpayer can always get better value for money and we are continuing to work towards that."

The independent remuneration panel's report recommending a freeze on allowances in West Sussex said: "Public service, rather than material reward, should be the primary motivation for involvement in local government."

Mark Wallace, a director for the Taxpayers' Alliance pressure group, said: "This pay award is a complete scandal.

"It is shocking that the independent panel which represents ordinary taxpayers on these matters has been flagrantly ignored."

Let's not be silly. Councillors do not receive ANY salaries for their work; they just get these allowances, which are hardly enough to get excited about. For Argus journalists to rant about councillors 'pocketing' expenses of £8000 is a bit OTT.

we COULD raise a complaint to the Government and have an independent review into this. Anyone up for signing a letter? I for one will be contesting any rise in council tax in April.

I will certainly sign a letter and/or will raise a complaint to the government, most of these so called "expenses" are more than some of the lower paid people get paid in wages for a 42+ hour week. absolutely disgusting!

Just start an e-campaign to NOT pay council tax period. Everyone pays in £10 which is used to fund legal/court fees for those that get sued, to drag it out as long as possible (obviously web site/funds hosted abroad out of reach of their greedy mitts). They can't sue everyone in the country at once. Todays government could not give a sh*t about the people they are lining there own pockets, so just stop playing ball, very simple. Lets face it if we had a PM who can lie to parliament to go to war why on earth should any of the rest of us respect their immoral taxation laws, highest taxes in history at a time of highest economic prosperity.

The biggest disgrace is the fact they "back-dated" their own pay award from April!
This is the same Council that tried to charge for Children's cycling training!
Would the Tory bosses have done this next year before the County elections ?I think not!

Just vote them out of office at the next County Council elections. West Sussex wasn't always run by a Tory clique. They've been defeated before and can be defeated again. It wouldn't be easy, but it would be very satisfying.

What is up with you silly people? These V.I.Ps are councillors! YES, councillors. They give all of their spare time up for the good of us. If i had my way, i would double their money. These people {of any party}are elected by you and me, and should be given the respect they so richly deserve. To give up so much of their private lives to the service of an ungreatfull public, shows just how wonderful these men and women are. So to all you "FAB" councillors,{of all partys) take your wages with pride, and what ever us little people say about you, just remember this**YOU ARE COUNCILLORS. So god bless each and every one of you.

Some councillors have external interests and some do not. Being a County Councillor is pretty much a full time job and the average (not leader or somebody with a "responsibility" ) doesn't get actually get much more (if equal to) the average wage.

I dont decry the job they are doing and the allowance they get in some cases is only just enough to live on. The question is, is right to award yourself an 11% pay rise?

Seems a bit OTT (I might manage 3% if I'm lucky).
