Brighton council still loaning out music of gay-hate artists

A council trying to ban anti-gay music is loaning CDs from its libraries of artists who have penned homophobic lyrics.

Pubs and clubs which play or allow artists to perform songs inciting homophobic acts face having their licence taken away in Brighton and Hove.

But it has emerged that work by Buju Banton, who recorded a song called Boom Bye Bye which advocates the shooting of gay men, and an album of songs by rapper Eminem, which includes homophobic lyrics, are available for loan at Brighton and Hove City Council libraries.

The CDs were initially withdrawn yesterday after The Argus contacted the council but tonight a spokesman for the authority said: "We've not banned any acts from nightclubs and it's not our role to provide artistic taste police in our cultural facilities either."

The council last week voted to tackle so-called "murder music" with a new section to its licensing policy.

This followed the furore surrounding a Buju Banton gig last year at Concorde 2 in Madeira Drive, Brighton, which was cancelled at the 11th hour after the council threatened to withdraw its licence.

Although the new council policy cannot legally ban any form of music, it was specifically designed to discourage murder music acts and allows licences to be reviewed if performances include incitement to violence.

The council already bans "murder music" from libraries following a decision in 2005.

But it emerged yesterday, after contact from a regular library user, that an album by "Buju Banton and friends", which does not include the notorious lyrics, was available from the Jubilee Library.

And four CDs of Eminem's song Criminal were available from the Jubilee Library and Hove Library.

Dave Jones, of Springfield Road, Brighton, who spotted the CDs said the confusion over what music is acceptable shows that any form of censorship leads to problems.

He said: "My sympathy with Brighton and Hove council's attempt to stop murder music is outweighed by my fear of censorship.

"Will the council destroy their CDs? I hope not.

"Performers like Buju Banton should be warned before a gig that if they advocate the murder of gay men they will be arrested and jailed. It is already a crime.

"Britain's censors have such a terrible record when it comes to permitting lesbian or gay sexual freedom that I can never trust them."

Banton is banned from singing the homophobic lyrics in this country but gay campaigners claim he performed it abroad as recently as 2005. The singer has since signed a commitment to ban hatred and prejudice from his music.

The council spokesman said: "A small section in the council's new licensing policy is aimed at preventing crime and antisocial behaviour in licensed premises.

"There is no ban or censorship on any particular artist or song and this section of the policy is not there to prevent people being offended - its sole purpose is to prevent crime and disorder.

"This is a separate issue to the library service, which also does not aim to censor material which is legally available to the public.

"The library service sets out to maintain a balanced stock of material, offering a wide range of materials reflecting a broad spectrum of views and opinions.

"The Eminem Marshall Mathers LP was released over seven years ago, the lyrics are controversial and the CD is labelled with an explicit content warning."

If I knew who the council spokesperson was I'd buy him/her a big Christmas present. A rare display of common sense.

Are we really so weak and insecure that the rantings of a few people (some of whom are not actually being that serious) upset, confuse, frighten or offend us. Remember that Germany's biggest threat right now is censorship of anything Nazi related in the media..which makes Germany look a bit Nazi to be honest.

Sticks and stones etc

seeing as the argus are re-hashing yesterday's story, I'm going to re-hash the post I made yesterday as it is still relevant...

the lyrics to eminem's 'criminal' go like this... now read very carefully...

"My words are like a dagger with a jagged edge
And I'll stab you in the head, whether you're a fag or les
A homosex, hermaph, or a transeves
Pants address, hey fags, the answer's yes
Homophobic?
Nah, you're just heterophobic"

notice that he is using a dagger as a metaphor for his words? or are you stupid censors unable to read or listen properly? he doesn't actually say he wants to stab or kill using a dagger, only that he wants his words to... in other words he wants others to 'listen' to him... simple as that... his words being the dagger, geddit? that's the problem with censors, they don't look at what is really being said... which in this lyrics case is that it's ok for 'gays' to scream 'homophobic', but not for 'straights' to say 'heterophobic'... marshall mathers is a helluva more intelligent writer than most give him credit for...

how much 'oppressive' literature is available to read in our libraries? writing that some may find aggressive or offensive? that's the trouble see, no-one can quantify the extent of it, as it would take too long. trouble is, unless you remove ALL literature and music that could cause offence or incite 'violence' you are being hypocritical. No, OK, let's collect all the naughty books together, put them in a field, and burn them all, whilst doing a nazi salute and running a swastika flag up a flagpole... there is no end to this, and it's shameful...

let's see how long THIS post lasts before being deleted...

why stop at eminem... i'll bet this has been available in libraries in brighton over the years, by the sex pistols...

"God save the queen
The fascist regime
They made you a moron
Potential H-bomb
God save the queen
'Cause tourists are money
And our figurehead
Is not what she seems"

not offensive to anyone? c'mon brighton council, censor and ban all radical literature and music, and destroy an essential part of this countries culture... what are you waiting for? oh, and is this is meant to be a democratic socialist country now?

They could have simply banned these CD's on the basis they are embarrassing rubbish.

This would avoided any accusations of PC driven stupidity and the only people disappointed would be a few spotty Hove teenagers who harbour Colimbine fantasies. Job done.

Jez in London, I have to say that gay people in general love str8 people. Our parents, families and friends are str8 so why would we have an issue with them. The only issue we have is with people who through ignorance and prejudice feel they should let us know how hated we are just because we are gay. Pride has a powerful meaning to some as many gay people have faced persecution from the laws of the land, religion etc. Gay people have had to fight for equal rights and thats all we want, definatley not to be treated differently from anyone else. If there was a song inciting the murder of str8s, then im sure they would be the same fuss and quite rightly so.

If you don't like things about Brighton & Hove then return to wheere you came from.

Plus fairytale of new york is one of the most over rated christmas songs ever. Radio one was doing everyone a favour, that ode to alcoholism and domestic violence that the once a year pub go-ers think is so brilliant, should be banned on the grounds of taste alone.

The Lord took Kirsty and not Shane MacGowan, he moves in mysterious ways indeed.

Sorry 'Spanish Gentleman'...'Fairyt

1. Since when has sexuality anything to do with race?
2. Since when has someone who has an opposing view to one's own automatically qualify as a 'Nazi'?

And the main point that is missing in several of these posts is that the 'ban' is being put into place because the material affected calls for killing and violence (etc) to be carried out due to a 'difference' from the relative norm of the artist. How about you simply swap 'gay' & 'batty boy' for black, disabled or even woman. You are quite right to point out that there is a great amount of media depicting violence by Man against his fellow man (the species, as opposed to gender) - the difference in these cases is that they call for killings of certain members of society. With rights come responsibilties and its about time certain sectors of society realised this.

No need to apologise, personal taste indeed. And do you dislike the words, such as the misogynistic use of '****' in the lyrics. Should we ban it? Oh its a minefield.

NO, ONLY IF YOU ARE A HYPERSENSITIVE IDIOT IT IS(not you Chippy).

Be fair chippy a lot of his body parts have not made it along with the rest of him, I'd have thought.....

I'll wish you a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year, before I forget (again). If we continue to try and ban things, be it songs with dodgy lyrics, and changing the names of things, so as not to offend, then we'll end up a stale, boring nation. I'm not really poltical, but freedom of expression should not be tampered with. I don't want my two kids growing up, and not being able to express themselves properly. Why should they?

As for good ol' Shane...well...I like a drink, but he must've put a hell of a lot of booze in him over the years. Is he ever sober? And his had some crackin' girls down the years. How's he do it???

I think individuals can buy what they want...but if some-one was singing a song about shooting 'pakis' and advocating aggression toward them...abviously that would be considered inapropriate....too right..you cant stop people having their views...and you cant stop people writing about their views...but you can say..."we don't want that in our town"....even if in 20 years it only ever makes 1 artist stop and question what they are saying, then its worth it. And it sends a strong message out to those worried teenagers who are aware they may be gay or lesbian that the authorities are doing something to support who they were born to be. So all in all too right...dont let people spout prejudice and entice hatred in our town...or stock their stuff in our publicly funded libraries....Because sadly kids are very impressionable and often quick to pick up on prejudice.

I'm pleased that they're not policing music tastes!
I can see why you wouldn't necessairily want that particular artist playing that music in the town.... but would Eminem be subject to the same treatment if he came to the Brighton Centre?
