Worthing morris dancers banned for being too dangerous

Morris dancers have been banned from practising because of health and safety fears.

For decades members of Sompting Village Morris have indulged in the ancient art of traditional English folk dancing without incurring anything more than a mild hangover.

But now postal bosses have thrown them out of the social club they have used to practice for more than 30 years after claiming they could be a danger.

The move has enraged the morris dancers who have branded Royal Mail "first class twits".

It means the dancers are being forced to find a new home just weeks before a string of important performances.

Martin Frost, the spokesman for Sompting Village Morris, said: "It is pretty ludicrous.

"We've used the building for years and years without a problem and now they turn around and say there are health and safety issues.

"I don't really know how morris dancers could pose a health and safety danger."

Roger Vincent, a spokesman for the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents added: "I don't see how morris men could injure themselves.

"My mate did it once and other than tripping over their sticks I can't see it happening."

The Morris Ring, the national association of morris dancers, also criticised the Royal Mail's decision.

A spokeswoman said: "Morris dancing is popular and welcomed across the country, this just seems a bit silly."

The row erupted after Royal Mail said the morris dancers, and others who use the social club at its sorting office in Chapel Road, Worthing, would have to make alternative arrangements.

The firm gave notice that the venue would have to be closed after normal office hours because it said nobody was on hand to ensure health and safety rules were being enforced.

It comes despite the Sompting morris dancers having used the venue unhurt since 1977.

Royal Mail said the social club is run by two postal workers who in turn were forced to give notice to the morris men.

But it conceded that it was ultimately its own decision to turf the morris men out.

Royal Mail spokesman James Taylor said: "It's right to say that it's because of health and safety but it's also to do with security.

"There is only a skeleton staff there at some times during the evening so having people in the social club can cause security worries.

"We're not saying the morris dancers are going to steal things, but it's the fact that people are coming and going from the site.

"We're very sorry that this has had to happen but we're sure they will find alternative arrangements.

"We hope they understand."

Royal Mail said the social club would continue to be open during normal office hours.

Sompting Village Morris said they had been posting a member on the door of the social club to ensure security was maintained throughout their practice session.

The group now has a series of events scheduled in March and May which they will now need to practice elsewhere for.

Mr Frost added: "I'm not sure where we're going to go, we're stumped for somewhere at the moment."

Are you able to offer Sompting Village Morris an alternative venue to practice?

SO IN OTHER WORDS THE HEADLINE "MORRIS DANCERS BANNED FOR BEING TOO DANGEROUS" IS A COMPLETE FABRICATION

The 'stop the press' headline should have read "A social club hall is unable to be used in the evenings due to staff shortage"

Perhaps not quite so dramatic, but . . .

Oh dear

Health and Safety were created as a separate, necessary, department to keep us all from unnecessary injury. Judge this department on its merit and not falsehoods, i say, that they obviously know what they are doing, otherwise they wouldn't exist. Morris dancers tend to consume a great deal of Alcohol before during and after their performance, now this creates a higher risk of injury, let's not forget, that their stick like instrument would be considered an offencive weapon, if in possession, under any other circumstance, mix this with merriment and alcohol and there is a far greater risk of an injurious type accident, i say, thank heaven for Health and Safety legislation, without this we would be overrun with paedophiles.

I am a HSE practitioner and even I admit it's getting out of hand. I am working on projects that if you went by procedure the place would never be built.
A simple wavier is all that needs to be signed. That they take full responsibilities for their actions.
Keep dancing.

To Concerned of Hove - get a life and stop being so ridiculous.
Morris Dancing is healthy exercise and sociable. HSE are just a complete and utter waste of money who are destroying communities and common sense.

It's all them jingling bells, that's the real health and safety problem, they gives people a head ache the next morning.
Or could it be the ale consumed at the pubs they dances at?
Anyway health and safety problems are whatever people want to come up with on the spur of the moment, you know like a way of getting out of doing something, can't do that or can't do this health and safety, good cop out. We men use it when the misses whant's the floor swept, phoor can't do that love had no training in the use of how to hold a broom, I could very well fall off the end of it and suffer a serious injury. Anyway must be off to the pub in a minute got the Morris Danceer's putting on a show.

In answer to "concerned" - yes, Morris dancers DO know what they're doing. Long story, but if you're not into it you wouldn't understand. As for any dangers posed by their "stick like instruments" (funny, I always thought a stick WAS a stick, not "like" a stick!), the only injuries I've ever seen is when we accidentally hit each others fingers, but just in case of any possibility of a stick breaking and hitting a member of the public,Morris sides have to carry insurance.

So there we have it - a social club which cannot - er - have people in it being social. Absolutely brilliant. .

All Morris Dancers should be banned - they're awful!
I had the unfortunate experience of a Morris Group get together at a museum where I worked. All flipping day, bells & drums, black faces & "rainbow" women. I am scarred for life.

As an interested outsider it seems to me that only Soozie has got to the nub of the story. What kind of Social Club is only open when the staff are working, and closes when they are off duty? Must be some meaning of "social" that I've never come across before.

This is a great example of good journalism if journalism is defined as writing stuff that creates an interest. Well done, the Argus! Miles Godfrey managed to press all sorts of buttons that are practically guaranteed to get a reaction, in one short story (Royal Mail - officialdom generally; health and safety police; morris dancers)! The only threads that (thankfully) didn't get teased out are the old ones about "pagan" practices and "male-only" attitudes. (Mind you I've probably stirred them up now). Interesting that a quote was obtained from the Morris Ring
the national association of morris dancers
when Sompting V M are actually members of the Morris Federation, which, like the other national organisation (Open Morris) welcomes women sides and mixed sides as well as men-only sides.
Anyway, good luck Sompting with finding a new home. Look forward to seeing you out and about again this year.
