A former City financier who lost the ability to walk is training for a 10K run after recovering his health "almost overnight".

ME sufferer Maurice Humphrys endured extreme fatigue for two years, and was unable to walk or stand for six months before he undertook the Lightning Process.

The £500 therapy has attracted controversy because there is no scientific evidence to prove it is effective.

But for Maurice, there is no doubt it works.

The day he began the three-day course, which is based on neuro-linguistic programming and hypnotherapy, he was able to walk a few steps around his garden.

Now he enjoys mountain climbing and is preparing for the Sport Relief run in Brighton next month.

He said: "Four days later I was able to cycle from my house into the village and within a couple of months I was completely mobile.

"It was so quick. From the outside it seems like a miracle but it was really hard work. It's like a tool and once you've learned it you've got to continually apply it."

The 27-year-old believes his illness was caused by stress. He was struck down with a virus while working in corporate finance in the City, spending up to four hours a day commuting from Brighton. He went home to his parents in Cambridge to convalesce but his condition did not improve and he was diagnosed with ME.

Doctors could only suggest breathing exercises and physiotherapy, which did not help, and neither did homeopathy, acupuncture, reiki or kinesiology.

He heard about the Lightning Process on BBC Radio 2's Jeremy Vine show, but the GP on the show dismissed it and so he initially forgot about it. Then in May 2006 he heard another show featuring a woman who had experienced dramatic results. He signed up a month later and was so impressed by its effectiveness he decided to learn to teach it.

He now lives in Elm Grove, Brighton, and is working as a life coach, hypnotherapist and Lightning Process practitioner.

The theory is that some ME sufferers are caught in an adrenaline loop, and the process is designed to break the loop. When people are under stress or catch an infection they release adrenaline, the fight or flight hormone. In some sufferers the adrenal glands continue to work overtime and this weakens the systems of the body, resulting in exhaustion.

ME Research UK has pointed out that there has been no research which proves that ME sufferers have excess adrenaline.

Tony Britton, of The ME Association, said his charity does not recommend the treatment, which first appeared three years ago.

He said: "It's the latest fad and has a huge amount of marketing behind it. The inventor, Phil Parker, is licensing practitioners across the UK and abroad.

"We have had some good feedback and it works for some people, but not for everybody.

"There's no scientific evidence to show how it works. We like to see a good discussion in peer-reviewed medical journals before making an assessment. We don't know, for example, whether people who receive good results are able to maintain that recovery."

There are many various complimentary therapies that have worked for people with ME over the years. What works for one person may not necessarily work for another. I have had ME for some years and have 4 children all of whom have had or have now Adolescent Fatigue Syndrome. I have noticed that careful pacing and learning to live a stress free lifestyle is still the only real tried and trusted method for a well paced recovery. Resulting not just in a return to a normal healthy lifestyle but with less periods of relapse.
Good Luck Sir . . I'm glad this worked for you.

I'm not sure how this therapy would work almost instantly.. I'm 20 and i've had ME and fibromyalgia since i was about 4 and i've tried various methods and nothing has worked for me! Like allison, the only thing that has helped alleviate the symptoms is careful pacing and trying to live a stress free lifestyle.. I wouldn't bother paying 500 pounds for something that isn't guaranteed to work.

We read with interest your piece (22nd) on the Lightning Process that is helping some with the Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - ME. We continue to hear from quite a number of people that have benefited significantly, sometimes after being ill for years. We also hear from others that have experienced little or no benefit from this approach so it is not for everyone and can be a expensive.

We continue to keep an open mind on this and welcome anything that can help those affected by ME. This illness can be potentially life ruining and affects over 6,000 adults and children across Sussex, many of whom are virtually housebound and in need of care.

The Lightening Process puts a huge price tag on (direct from Phil Parker is £1000) but there are alternatives that are cheaper and have a similar approach . For anyone who is interested there is a course for under £100 - the Gupta Programme. It is so cheap as it is a DVD course you are sent in the post so no one to one. I am on it now and finding it brilliant after a few days. £100 is a much smaller gamble!

I'm a girl, aged 16. I had ME/CFS for about 11 months following a virus brought on by extreme stress at school. I had daily headaches, aches and pain, tiredness etc. I couldn't go out which made my social life very poor and restricted. I missed out on most of last year's school work and was also struck down with many viruses which made me relapse.

I attended a CFS/ME Self Management Course in November which introduced me to pacing. Initially, this did have a postive affect but i continued to get viruses.

December 07, I was completely fed up and depressed as i was feeling ill all the time.
After christmas i heard about the Lightning Process, through the CFS/ME Society newsletter and was ready for a change (a new me). I was excited and a little nervous at the time, but Maurice was very understanding. By the end of the 1st session i was amazingly feeling wide awake for the first time in a year. After the second session i felt great. I went shopping straight after and I even went in the changing rooms to try on some clothes, after a year of internet shopping. I bought some new jeans which i now call my 'Lightning Jeans'. When i came out of the shop i felt just as great as when i went in. By the third session I felt wonderful - the aching had gone and I was so much more alert. -I went shopping after + then for a walk and i pushed my little brother in the buggy which was a massive achievement. I was so pleased and everyone in my life was happy for me too. Now my life is back in my own hands and i am enjoying every second of it. I have been out shopping, clubbing, to town and even to school which I am gradually getting back into.
I now consider myself well and am using the Process appropriately. It's amazing that it only took 6 hours of my time + under £500 for me to get my life back. To me, good health is worth so much more!

I believe that if you have the will and determination to want to really change your life then The Lightning Process is the answer.
Thanks Maurice for teaching me the process and good luck in your run!

In response to the comment by The ME Association that there is no evidence that the results are sutained over a period of time...I did the LP with Phil in 2005 I have been M.E. free since I finished the course and feel like I have been given a second chance at life. I find it hard to accept that so many people in the M.E community are not embracing something that actually gets to the core of the illness and teaches your body how to be healthy again.

I highly recommend it to anybody with M.E. or related illnesses. If you are prepared to be committed and dedicated to using the process initially the results are life changing and sustained. Its fab.

My life is now so much more than I ever imagined it could be :o)

i am an me sufferer now for over three years and there is a treatment for people like who cannot afford to pay but in the british isles it depends on your postcode.it is not fair that leading celebrities make light of me as a silly disease. i know that it is a struggle most days to cope,i just know that if it was not for my faith and a hope for the future i would be severely down allthe time.there is not a cure for me just treatment that may ease symptoms.please any me sufferers out there do the best you can,i empathise with you.
