More than 80 firefighters were tonight tackling a fire at a cement factory.

Crews were called to fight the blaze at Shoreham Cement Works, off the A283, at 9.15pm.

Fourteen fire engines, two water carriers, one breathing apparatus team and an aerial ladder platform from stations across East and West Sussex were called to the fire.

The A283 from Shoreham to Steyning was closed to motorists at about 10pm.

A West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service spokesman described the blaze as a "massive job".

He said: "A workshop used as a body spray building caught alight. We asked for the road to be closed nearby because we believe there is a possibility of flammable cylinders inside the workshop."

It is understood a fire engine was damaged whilst fighting the inferno and two firefighters were taken to hospital.

there's a number of small industrial units the other side of the road from the main factory building, I guess it was those that caught fire.

I hope the firefighters weren't too badly injured.

Right type of water - just the tide was flowing the wrong way at the time.

The Fire Brigade think it might be arson and those responsible could have been covered in cement dust. The Police are now looking for four hardened criminals!

when you are brave enough to get off your butt and do something for the community then you can slag it off, we were there all night trying to save people's property, maybe they are not the same class as you but they are still people, maybe it was not an accident, who are we to judge! we had no water as the tide was out, not to mention the 7 firefighters that ended up in hospital!!!

I agree Firefighters do a fantastic job when required but know for a fact that most of the time time they are sat on their butts waiting. Oh and how many do it for the community and not for money?

nobody slags off the army just because they are not killing somebody all the time!
firefighters do alot more these days than just squirting water!
they are heavily involved in prevention and protection as well as just responding
and yes i'm sure they are in it for the money too, after all it is a JOB not a pasttime!!!!!
they should be on 30K for what they do.....
y?
'cos they are WORTH IT

I was there most of the night helping remove the injured firefighters, while they were on their way to help other people's property, two appliances hit each other and caused more problems then whoever started the fire. Everyone grow up, you have no idea how it feels helping your own colleagues who are injured while they do their best to help other people.

Dave, At home says...
10:14pm Tue 8 Apr 08

Well something is not right here, one fireman brings 'class' into the discussion, but I don't think anyone objects to anyone doing a honest days work. And the other fireman cites problems with two appliances hitting each other. And how did 8 firefighters end up in hospital?

I think the fire service need to review its operational
procedures as none of these problems should have happened with proper training. I was never taught to act like that at the FSC - Moreton!!!!!

I cannot believe how rude some of you have been about the fire service. I just hope that all of you that have taken the **** out of the fireman and their jobs never have a house fire because if you do will know how hard these guys work to save your properties.

hear hear

perhaps these idiots should remember its the firemen that have to cut people and/or parts of people from the wreckage of cars after accidents.

never underestimate what the firemen have to do. I think they deserve the opportunity to 'sit around a bit' between emergency calls.

This is funny. It is a joke. It does not belittle the fire service or its personelle in any way. A little insensitive at very worst.

hey guys, lets have a little decorum, its one thing to have a joke at things, what you say to your pals is one thing, the british humour being the best and we all joke about, but if your going to comment on here at least keep it tasteful these firefighters do a fantastic job and it isnt that they just fight fires, so remember this as you will never know when you will need there help.
