Tombstoner injured

A young man is being treated by paramedics after leaping from Eastbourne Pier in a craze known as "tombstoning".

Eastbourne lifeboat crew had initially been called to pick up two canoeists whose kayak had overturned in Pevensey Bay.

One of them was taken to hospital and treated for the effects of being in the water.

The lifeboat then diverted to rescue the man who had jumped off the west side of the pier.

He was dragged from the water by the coastguard and at 3.45pm was still being treated by paramedics outside the Chatsworth Hotel in Grand Parade.

Did you see what happened? Let us know below.

I didn't see it, but according to a report in the Argus, he was injured jumping off Eastbourne pier.

Anyone hear of the Darwin Awards. This is the sort of person who guarantees the survival of the human race by clearing the prats out of the gene pool.

If we are lucky, we will all be a car length up in traffic tomorrow.

This has always been a problem in Eastbourne. The security staff on the pier used to stop this and also the Parade Inspector before they got rid of her, she was brilliant at her job on the seafront.

I think there's an easy way to stop people jumping off the piers. Firstly - stop calling it 'tombstoning' and making it sound glamorous.
Secondly put up large signs on the piers saying that anyone who injures themselves jumping into the water will be liable for the total cost of all hospital treatment and RNLI rescue - minimum charge £1000.
I think you might see fewer people jumping.
