Cars torched in suspected arson attack

More than £100,000 of damage was caused to cars parked outside a showroom in a suspected arson attack.

Two people, believed to be teenagers, were arrested and questioned by police after the fire at St Leonards Motors in Churchwood Drive, St Leonards.

Four vehicles were destroyed and three damaged during the blaze, which happened at 1.16am on Saturday.

Showroom boss Rob Noble said the dealership, which runs showrooms in St Leonards and Hastings, had recently installed security cameras at a cost of £100,000.

He said: "The incident happened right in front of the CCTV cameras and we have given a copy of the footage to the police.

"It would appear one car was set on fire and the flames spread to the other vehicles. Fortunately there were no explosions but we have four cars which are completely burnt out and damage to three others.

"The outside wall of the workshop is also blackened, but we have been able to carry on working as normal."

Mr Noble added: "We have had the usual onlookers down here asking what's going on, but luckily we have been able to trade.

"Fortunately, the torched cars were all our own vehicles. They were demonstrators and a courtesy car. One of the cars was an E-plate Ford Escort, which is a collectors' item.

"I would say the fire has caused in excess of £100,000 of damage.

"We are annoyed, but also thankful it was not a lot worse, and nobody was injured.

"We are also thankful for the CCTV which we had installed quite recently.

"The police and the fire brigade were on the scene very quickly and have been brilliant."

Anyone with information about the fire should call Sussex Police on 0845 6070999 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
