Bee-keepers want more money to be spent on research into the threats facing honey bees.
Apiarists in East Sussex said 20 per cent of their colonies were killed over the winter and if the trend continued it would have a big impact on farming.
They want the government to spend up to £8 million over five years to look at the mites and viruses that can kill bees.

The British Beekeepers Association (BBKA) has backed calls for more money to be spent on bee health research.
Environment and Rural Affairs Minister Lord Rooker said the Government would consider the proposals once it received a business-plan report.
He added: "It is completely out of the question to say we've got a problem with bees and Defra must spend £8 million."

This really needs to happen already.
Not just for the beekeepers, without bees the whole eco-system will suffer on an epic scale, which will pretty quickly make people suffer.
So many plants, tree's and creatures are dependant on bees in all kind's of ways, and lots would also dissapear without them.
A lot more to those little bees than just honey.

boring.
who else would like some money for nothing?
tel you what; stop paying, say, 10 whitehawk slackers to sit about and watch sky tv and the bee-keepers will have MORE than enough money.
i'd rather the money went on bees than bums.
boring.

Couldn't agree more. Give the cash to the bees. We waste enough on stupid projects and workshy layabouts as it is, we might as well give some to a far more worthy cause.

A lot of these so-called bees in Sussex actually fly in from France, bringing diseases and putting more burden our cash-strapped flowers. New [bold]Lie[/bold] bour (see what I did there?) should be putting our own bees, ants and spiders first - not these layabout bees.

This is a cause that deserves money, crop reduction worldwide due to ill health of bee colonies is starting to be a real problem affecting food levels that are already dwindling worldwide. Give the research money now without red tape.
