Building work is to begin finally on the Brighton Eye over a year late and after a succession of false starts.

The developers behind the i360 seafront viewing tower have begun to put in place agreements which will enable them to commence construction within months or even weeks.

It is a boost to Brighton and Hove after a period of uncertainty about major projects planned for the seafront.

The developers behind schemes at Brighton Marina, the King Alfred site in Hove, the Brighton Centre and Black Rock have all been forced to look at their plans again because of the credit crunch.

Architects Marks Barfield, who were responsible for the London Eye, were given planning permission in 2006 to build the i360, a 172m high needle tower dubbed the "stick of rock" with an ascending and descending donut-shaped viewing platform.

Now notices have been issued by the Department for Transport (DfT) to enable work at the development site at the land end of the wrecked West Pier.

Members of the West Pier Trust, which had previously campaigned to rebuild the pier but now back the i360, said the move was very positive news.

Just what we need. The glitzy, jazzy "Chav-O-Lator" (as I've heard it called) originally designed around 1964. Just curious... what happens to the tons of additional car traffic on the already choked seafront? Are there any plans to handle it? Or is that a silly question?

So sad that the plans to restore the abandoned West Pier as a quiet, elegant, unique attraction for Brighton failed. What a pity. It would've made such a difference here. Sad. Very, very sad.

I'm looking forward to going on it. Blackpool eat your heart out.
If Brighton is to remain the best seaside holiday destination then the i360 is just what we need.

Between the oversized Chav-o-lator (that's a great name for it!), the huge, indescribably vile monstrosity at the King Alfred site, the overscaled leviathans at the Marina and no doubt something even WORSE than what's already there to replace the Brighton Centre (if that's possible), whatever remains of our once-grand seafront will surely go to hell in a handbag. There is no reason on earth why our seafront can't be gracious and civilised like Eastbourne or any number of Continental seaside resorts. But no. We have to cater to (literally) the lowest common denominator and make our prized seafront as ugly and trashy as humanly possible. We must be a city of masochists here in Brighton & Hove. As Bette Davis once said in a film, "What a dump!" Amen.

I am still angry at the professional arson attack on the old pier. It has now been proven without doubt that it was a "noble gesture"

Great news another unique feature for Btn and Hove.

It is a shame that the council are insisting that a cycle lane should be included up the side to enable access for cyclists as they have on the other unique feature of Hove Grand Ave/ The drive but the EYE being marginally steeper

Chav-o-lator! Priceless.

In all honesty, I think it will certainly add something positive to the City. Considering we, as a City, survive mainly on visitors, it is important to stay one step ahead of other destinations.

Surely this offers the best chance to salvage anything of the West Pier? I thought that was the idea.

Parking will obviously be an issue that will need to be closely inspected. About time the council got a decent park and ride scheme going. Perhaps this is the perfect opportunity.

Brighton - the best seaside holiday destination? What else have we got then? Some chavvy pier, the white elephant above the old Aquarium, the 'A.N. Other' shopping centre, the North Laine that is being priced out by greedy landlords, the Jubilee Street 'Developement' and a council hell bent on attracting wealthy Londoners to party with them!

Woo, we've got a big needle on the seafront - it'll go with the thousands of discarded dirty ones scattered around town during the day!

I just wish people who think our seafront will be 'spoiled' would stand at the end of the pier and look back at the mish-mash of 60s, 70s and 80s architecture which dominates it.

So its still not going to start for a few weeks or a few months, most likely a few years or never, planning is a fiasco. we need a beautiful and vibrant seafront but there is a fine line between tackiness and it all depends on the detail. This council has a reputation for unnecessary development that is bland cheap and tacky and never delivers, look at the mess of Pool valley already well over run, and how simple a project that was, beggars belief and laughable. I think if all the ideas matched the reality then wow but its more like whoa stop. We need attractions as a seaside resort relying on tourists, but we certainly do not need shoebox housing, I can see plenty of for sale and to let signs. We should have a finite number of housing to meet our infrastructure, 1 in 1 out. The whole country is in a mess due to our open door policy and rubbish infrastructure. Why are we wasting millions of pounds on certain ridiculous cycle lanes (grand avenue/the drive)when it should go into more useful routes or park and ride or monorail/trams etc. that are more useful to all citizens in all weathers. We cannot cope with more residents until this city is brought up to scratch with its infrastructure, a quality environment, social skills and crime.

It will never be built its already 11 months behind schedule. even if it does it will break down or never work just like the laughable glass lift on the spinaker tower in portsmouth, its doomed to utter failure.

We'll soon have a giant, moving "w**ker" hand gesture on the seafront. A fitting monument to the architects and planners that put it there.

Congratulations, there is someone living in Brighton who is sensible to see through to the reality without slagging off every other seaside resort, town city etc to make Brighton look better..

Personally I agree with what a lot of posters are saying, Brighton is (was) a grand, elegant, impressive seaside resort that is in danger of being draped with all manner of tacky modern out of place attractions and architecture. The council should concentrate on enhancing what Brighton already has without having to copy Portsmouths Spinnacker tower..oh and sort out the problem of parking..

Exactly. I am a Brightonian, Bob, and it's really getting on my nerves all this blinkered 'we're better than anywhere else and thats that, fingers in ears blah blah blah, can't hear you! b.s.' that is being peddled by the powers that be and various other people.

Winkywonky earlier used Blackpool as an example. Well, Blackpool may not have changed much in the years but that's because they're proud of their heritage and what they were always famous for. The illuminations etc. draw thousands each year.

I remember as a kid, the seafront was amazing. Full of colour and excitement and all kept in top order. The council decided to re-do the Pavillion Gardens to make them as original as possible, so why not the seafront?

Brighton seems to be too worried about what outsiders think though. We used to have fireworks down the seafront for the festival - not some contrived show by some unheard of Spanish dance company - but straight up fireworks displays. If we did that now all you'd hear is complaints from people who have bought their Van Allen apartment (just like they did when there was the Ace Cafe reuinion and speed trials down Madiera drive)

Lets get some more fun back into this town (oops, sorry, city) and stop worrying what 'big brother' London would say. You take us as you find us, if you don't like it, go to Cannes or Barcelona, we want the old Brighton back, not the one papering over the cracks with La-di-da names coming up with crack-pot buildings that attract approximately no-one.

And stop telling us we're not forward thinking either, because the only Brighton of the future we can see is one occupied by Londoners, second homers and hangers on all telling us how they want us to live!
