When "Iron" Mike Tyson tells you to make him a bed, it is probably wise to listen.

That is exactly what has happened at Marsha's, a furniture store in Hove, which is proving a big hit with some of the most famous names in boxing.

The shop, in Newtown Road, has now made beds for American heavyweight legends Tyson, Evander Holyfield and Tony Tucker.

The £4,500 antique-leather beds come fitted with a 30in television screen which pops out of the end at the touch of a button.

Shop owner Laxley Pennant met the boxers through his publishing company when he printed a book on Irish boxer Joe Egan, a former sparring partner of Tyson - who once famously bit a chunk out of the ear of opponent Holyfield during a bout.

Mr Pennant said: "Mike was down in Brighton and came to have a look around the shop. He loved the bed so we sent one over to the US for him, and word seemed to get around.

"The boxing community is close-knit and they all want what the other has got, so it's just ballooned from there. It's amazing.

"Through the publishing we have become friends with Mike. People have pre-conceptions about him but he is such an intelligent guy.

"He can tell you absolutely anything about boxing but he is also educated in other ways. We drove around Brighton with him and he was pointing out the statues and saying which period they were built in."

The beds have to be king-size as the likes of Tony "TNT" Tucker tower at 6ft 5in.

Tony, who was a world champion and fought Tyson and Lennox Lewis, was at the shop to order his bed this week.

Tony and Joe were in town as a guest of Brighton-based boxer Scott Welch, himself a former heavyweight champion.

Tony said: "I like the bed because you just touch a button and the TV comes out of it. This sort of thing would be so popular in the States. I had a water bed before so I thought it was time for a change."

Joe was known as the "toughest white man on the planet" and spent years taking knocks in the ring as Tyson's sparring partner. He said: "I love being down in Brighton, and seeing Scott and the other guys has been brilliant.

"It's funny how all these American guys are after the same bed but the boxing community is like a big family. Tony Tucker was a great puncher and put 58 people to sleep in his boxing career - so I think he deserves a rest himself."
