A dog owner has told of his ordeal at the hands of the big cat dubbed the Beast of Bevendean.

Bill Batchelor, of Bodiam Avenue, Bevendean, said he has seen the wild animal on three occasions.

And he described the moment when the sharp-toothed cat pounced on his pet dog as he was out walking.

But Mr Batchelor said the mysterious animal he encountered was not black as some residents have reported, but a sandy colour with a grey muzzle.

A spokeswoman for Sussex Police confirmed that an officer had attended the scene and had passed on information about the sighting to a wildlife group.

i live literally right up the back of bevendean and i saw it prowling across the hill which my house backs onto, seriously that thing was huge and i definitely believe that thing is a panther. i had a sheep turn up in that field with its head missing and three of its legs and a scratch down its stomach from a paw, this was before i actually saw it and i thought it was a fox but the scratch was really big like a grown mans hand size. i saw it pretty close and it was about as long as a horse and thats what i thought it was at first but i noticed the cat like structure and a great long tail. this is not a exaggeration there is something up in that hill.

I saw it too. It was about the size of an elephant. It was orange in colour and had a human face with big round ears. I am sure it spoke to me as well but in Norwegian. It was last Friday night, I was just sitting at home enjoying some mushroom tea when I saw it through the window. Honest.

I have just been attacked by the 'Horror of Hove', it had a blue rinse and mowed me down with its electric buggy at the Sackville Road traffic lights. Bingo halls in the area are on high alert.

I've seen this cat or whatever it is when out practising one evening at East Brighton Golf Club. It was prowling up the side of the second hole and is somewhere between the size of a big cat and a panther. It is sandy in colour. I was about 300yrds away and that was plenty close enough.

There is no question of whether it existed or not. This was last August.

If there were photos or videos taken you can bet they'd be the kind of blurry out-of focus shots they have of Bigfoot, or the Loch Ness Monster, and there would still be people arguing both sides of the case that it is a beast or just a cat...

Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

"Beware the Beast of Bevendean, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jubjub bird, and shun
The frumious Bandersnatch!"

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
And stood awhile in thought

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Beast of Bevendean, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! and through and through
The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
He went galumphing back.

"And has thou slain the Beast of Bevendean?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!"
He chortled in his joy.

'Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
Did gyre and gimble in the wabe:
All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Everybody wants to see a cat,
Because a cat's the only cat,
Who knows where he's at,
Everybody's picking up on that feline beat,
'Cos everything else is obsolete.

These comments are racist! When it was a 'big black cat' it was dangerous. Now it is grey or whatever everyone has calmed down. Racial discrimination at it's very worst!

this is stupid. 2 out of four of us live in bevendean and have never seen anything slightly like that! as for saying its racist, get a grip it's an animal! And stop saying it's your cat it ours! People just want attention, take a picture and then we'll belive you! and a clear one would be nice :)

It's funny, most of the comments people have left are just full on sarcasm or too **** serious! Either way, do you people have nothing better to do??!!! Yes, I probably come across hypacritical, but to make a point my friends, to make a point! Oh, and by the way, half the people that have left comments don't even bloody live in any of the areas it's been seen in and yet they're the ones that have been making the most fuss!! Until a CLEAR and REAL photo has been seen, I will continue to think it's just another myth. Good day.
