The restoration of a historic seafront bandstand has moved a step closer.

Planning permission for the restoration of the Grade II listed building has been granted by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The news has been welcomed by campaigners who have battled to save the dilapidated bandstand.

Brighton-based architects DRP have been appointed to lead the project on Brighton seafront.

The firm, based in Upper Lewes Road, will oversee the £850,000 scheme to return the crumbling landmark to its former glory.

The application includes change of use of the ground floor and basement from public conveniences and storage to a café.

The top part of the bandstand will be restored to stage concerts and other events and the adjoining area improved and enhanced.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment, said: "Restoration of the bandstand is a priority for this council so it's wonderful news the application has now been approved which will move the project onto the next stage."

How long has this taken the council to do something about? A year a go Cllr Georeegy 'more excuses' Theobald had his photocall alongside the bandstand and promised the earth. A year, yes a year letter we still see no progress. In that time he has build needless cylce lanes, introduced more communal bins and banned dogs from the beaches...but restore the bandstand? He didn't have time.

The Tories will be in power for 4 years. They will have wasted the first two of them trying to deliver their election promise to restore the bandstand.

As the joke goes, how many hapless Tories does it take to restore a bandstand?

...Andswer none, as its not been restored.

The Bandstand is a priority? yet has been allowed to rot for years, think West Pier,Blackrock swimming pool site etc, etc.
I have always been in favour of the scheme but £850,000 is nonsense,we cant afford it.

How about finishing the restoration of the lift on Kemptown sea-front first. The job was started last summer and appears to have been abandoned.

Its only a bandstand for chrissakes. If it takes this long for a poxy bandstand renovation, lets face it, the Brighton Centre etc will never get replaced.

Exactly, they ought to spend it on something useful rather than a cr*p bandstand!

This is excellent news. Live music is thriving in the city and the bandstand is desperatley needed. I played by the bandstand with Patcham Silver Band two weeks ago and I lost count of the people listening. Lets hope the restoration begins really soon now.

I think you will find the money is from private enterprise, hence the cafe. However agree that bureacracy and red tape is ridiculous and in the mean time we have had the worst road schemes imaginable imposed on us, such as grand avenue cycle lanes and brighton to newhaven bus corridor, they were started by the labour administration but the tories will take the rap for it, deservedly for not abandoning such waste and congestion causing schemes, whilst our beautiful buildings and new and exciting developments get left behind.

Well, I hope it is a political promise that is kept, but I will believe it when I see it. Still ... I guess a couple of years of the Tories fumbling about isn't as bad as the local Labour councillors sitting on their hands for decades! Let's watch with interest ...

So why hasn't Councillor Watkins asked why it should take £850,000 to restore the bandstand?

Doesn't the Council have staff to carry out maintenance from year to year?

What exactly is so bad with the Bandstand that it costs so much to spruce it up?

So far the only performance has been Councillor Theobald blowing his own trumpet. A discordant noise.

the bandstand news is as nothing to the rumour that the funding for the king alfred ugly towers scheme has been pulled. if that's true, hooray for the credit crunch!

The council bid for £500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with another £300,000 set aside from council coffers. But the application faced a series of setbacks and the council decided earlier this year to fund the project itself.

It would be interesting to know the original cost of this work,we can then see what the delays will cost us.
