The restoration of a historic seafront bandstand has moved a step closer.

Planning permission for the restoration of the Grade II listed building has been granted by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The news has been welcomed by campaigners who have battled to save the dilapidated bandstand.

Brighton-based architects DRP have been appointed to lead the project on Brighton seafront.

The firm, based in Upper Lewes Road, will oversee the £850,000 scheme to return the crumbling landmark to its former glory.

The application includes change of use of the ground floor and basement from public conveniences and storage to a cafÈ.

The top part of the bandstand will be restored to stage concerts and other events and the adjoining area improved and enhanced.

Councillor Geoffrey Theobald, cabinet member for environment, said: "We were very impressed with the planning application submitted by DRP, which included a state of the art three-dimensional survey.

"Our officers demanded the highest possible standards and the survey has helped produce an excellent scheme.

"Restoration of the bandstand is a priority for this council so it's wonderful news the application has now been approved which will move the project onto the next stage.

"The bandstand is of historic and cultural importance to our city and much loved by our residents, so we are looking forward to returning this jewel in the seafront crown back to its former glory."

The bandstand, situated close to the West Pier, is a listed building that dates back to 1884.

It has been derelict for 30 years and a series of bids to renovate the structure have failed.

The council bid for £500,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund, with another £300,000 set aside from council coffers.

But the application faced a series of setbacks and the council decided earlier this year to fund the project itself.

Patricia Horne, founder of Save our Brighton Bandstand, compiled a petition of more than 1,000 signatures in support of the bandstand.

She said: "We were disappointed that work did not start in Spring as we had hoped.

"The council has worked hard and I am delighted that at last this laborious process has produced some good results.

"We will continue to host concerts at the bandstand site to keep it in the public eye. The sooner it is restored the better."

Tenders to carry out the restoration are now being submitted and work is expected to start later this year.

It is hoped the bandstand will be open by summer next year.

Will we be given any idea of what costs what in this renovation work?

What needs to be done other than the paintwork?

Oh, and no doubt it will be all ruined by the oh so necessary display of the "corporate colours" of whichever chain gets to run the café and "facilities".

I fear the worst.

£850,000 they do realise that its a bandstand and not a grandstand.
I hope the standard of work is far better than the childrens water area close by.It looked good for a 12 month then the mosaic pieces started to break away leaving the pattern/design looking shabby. It needed following up with the contractors but nothing has been done,it also throws doubt on council staff whoes duty it is to ensure work is carried out to the required standard. It will need attention so add it on the council tax,no problem!

What on earth did they have to do with it? They'd love to take credit for it, but it was the Regency Tories who worked with the Council Cabinet member to sort this mess out.

They shouldn't take false credit.

in the midst of the 'credit crunch' and with rampant inflation hitting consumers with big price increases in petrol and heating bills (not to mention food etc.) I trust that the Tories (given they have chosen to spend £850k on a bandstand and c £800k on the most rediculous cycle path ever - the drive etc.) won't be implementing council tax increases in the next financial year since they have money to burn??? householders in the city are struggling to cover mortgage costs as it is and to be frank if mr theobald wants to stroke his ego with £850k he can do it from his own pocket. the taxpayer should get value for money and i can't see from this that we are!

850 000 smakeroonies. Just think what else could be done with the money. From what I have read above a lick of paint and some TLC would do the trick for the bandstand. Surely there are more valuable projects that would benefit Brighton residents (taxpayers not tourists) than the seafront bandstand.

Look into some of the background of the matter - if it hadn't been for a lot of their work nothing would have been done at all.

No doubt the first concert will be yet another appearance by jumped-up dj, Fatboy Slim.

That is actually not true. It was all going to happen anyway. Just how closely has Mrs Horne worked with Cllr Theobald?

She is taking false credit for the Conservative hardwork in Regency.

Let's hope so, we've only got 112 branches in Brighton, and none of them are near the Bandstand. I'm looking forward to my 'banduccino' and an afternoon's jazz just as soon as the work is finished. Probably in 2023. And overbudget, of course.

Rumour round here is that Mrs Horn lead a fake campaign for it to be restored so she could run a cafe there and make money off the back of it. Hardly fair of the council to give it to one person in these circumstances.

again, these councellors should be lined up and shot.
i would do the job in 3months for £100k and i GUARANTEE it will be as good a job as the team who will be doing it.
its soooo obvious, the disgusting councellors fight for a project to happen but fight for an over estimated budget so they can take a slice.
they are scumbags who disgust me.

You could build several houses for that money? So why is it costing so much simply to restore the Bandstand? No doubt they are "factoring in" the consultants.
