Plans have been submitted for a university building which will help to make Brighton and Hove Albion's new stadium possible.

The University of Brighton has applied for planning permission for a new five storey school of education at its campus in Falmer, Brighton.

The £23million scheme is the latest stage in a redevelopment of the campus which will eventually create space for part of the new football ground, due to be built in a neighbouring field.

Groundworks have already started for the school of education, which is due to open in July 2009.

The site had to be temporarily closed on May 7 after construction workers came across an unexploded Second World War bomb.

Brighton and Hove City Council is expected to make a decision on whether to give the scheme the go ahead by September 22.

Looks as if, bit by bit, precedent set, more of Falmer will be built over.

How long until "we can't afford to build the ground until Tesco gets permission to build s superstore" claims come from the Albion!

The council decision is not until 22nd September.
Why has work already be started?
Why does this have to happen to create space for the stadium?

Come on Argus give us some detail.
Look at the outcry about Starbucks opening without permission and just imagine if the Albion had started building.

The University is too big for it's boots. This must be an eysore in an AONB?

Come on all you protesters get there and chain youselves to trees and diggers.

Go on then, go and chain yourself to a digger. It might do us all a favour and run you over as well.

Face it, the stadium will be built.

UP THE ALBION !!!!

How long before these sceptics stop spreading mistruths and criticising a very important development for Brighton & Hove?

err... never. Educational facilities were always integral to the development. Conversely a supermarket never was and never will be. But hey, don't let the facts get in the way of your tiresome, ill-researched comments.

I do not see how banks can have the money to fund a stadium to which people cannot afford to go, let alone keep buying copies of the "strip", pay for "hospitality" and all that other irrelevant stuff.

It's a new era, people are battening down the hatches with the twenty-first century and recession.

Spot on..construction companies are now laying people off, are stopping new developments and by the Autumn/winter those same construction companies will be going bust - just look at the big name construction company share prices - down 90% in a year- the smart money in the city knows Labours boom has gone belly up.

As the recession bites later this year public funded building projects will be pulled and any hope of finding a bank stupid enough to fund this project has long passed.

Face facts you have missed the boat if you want the stadium even started this side of 2015, put your own money where your mouth is and pay for it yourselves rather than assume a loan or public money will always be there to help you out.

Its people borrowing money like there is no tomorrow, banks lending it without a thought and this Government sitting idly by doing nothing taking the credit for the boom that has got us into this mess in the first place.

....and believe me its a mess that a lot of people commenting on here don't fully appreciate the size of yet!

Don't forgot us Albion fans will come up to the field and physically kick your arses if you try any of that funny business.

William from the posts above you have shown 2 things

1: You know absolutely nothing about the building industy

2: you know nothing about finance

GET OVER THE FACT THE STADIUM WILL BE BUILT

The building industry is being affected yes: BUT only the main housebuilders are being affected I.E Taylor Wimpey and Barrets the credit crunch has not affected many commercial ventures at all

Finance will be given for the stadium as once again it is a business loan and not a mortgage
Business loans again have been largely unaffected unlike mortgages

Learn your facts before you post sh!te

The university already has full planning permission for what is being built. It has simply applied for permission to vary some details of the design. If the permission is refused, then the original design will be adhered to. There is no question of flouting the law.

The buildings simply replace pre-fabs constructed in the 1960s, and would have been required whether or not the stadium gets built. But just in case it does get built, the new building is being squashed up nearer other buildings in order to free up land for the stadium.

steward 433 - I'm laughing - I wish I could tell you why but I'm laughing.

So what are the FACTS then my friend? Rather than criticise my post teach us what little you know about high finance and construction and convince me that this is a viable banking proposition - I've got a spare 30 seconds.

I ask only one question -

WHICH BANK IS LENDING THE MONEY FOR THIS?

Come on its been months now. Put up or shut up. Which cash strapped , rights issuing, credit crunch hit, badly led , too late risk averse, barely solvent bank is weakening its balance sheet even further to lend circa £20M to a loss making underperforming, weak , poorly supported, asset bare, group of mates who meet on a Saturday and have the temerity to call themselves a football club?

Come on ....

WHICH BANK????

Because as soon as I know I want to be first in the queue (and there will be more queues outside banks) to make sure I have no money in it in a savings account because I may not get it back when it goes bust. Backing this little "banking proposition" is a sure fire way to lose money - they may as well put the cash in a heap on the ground and set fire to it!

You really have no idea whats heading your way economically do you...its like watching lambs being led off to an abbatoir.

Great, but where are the students going to live when this stupid city council is now trying to stop landlords renting to students near the universities.

Der, so all the students will have to travel across town mostly by car because they are not allowed to live near the campus. In the meantime houses will lay empty, wake up brighton and hove council the private landlord does this city an enormous favour, because cannot supply enough affordable housing, and it is about time you appreciated this before we invest in another city, leaving squatter ghettos here instead.
