A CHARITY which provides a free service for unpaid carers is launching a new project to help hundreds of people share their experiences.

Care for the Carers - based in Eastbourne - is hoping to create a book of stories written by the caring community throughout East Sussex so they can share what they go through.

They will all then be included in what the charity describes as a high quality booklet.

The scheme is being funded through a legacy donation and poet Evlynn Sharp will be the writer in residence.

Chief Executive Jennifer Twist said: "The decision to pioneer a creative writing scheme is inspired by our work with carers who have to deal with specific pressures, concerns, anxieties – and who would welcome a way to talk about aspects of their lives.

"Carers can feel isolated or unheard so we want to offer a safe and secure atmosphere in which they can share their thoughts and feelings with others.

"We’re pleased Evlynn has joined us and she’ll use techniques so carers of all ages and diversities can find a voice of self-expression and personal truth."

The charity says that the role of carers is demanding.

Jennifer said: "Carers’ voices are often hidden behind a lifestyle that involves putting the needs of others first.

"They can find themselves becoming stressed, or having to cope with difficult choices such as stalling their own plans for their future, or needing to negotiate complex health and welfare regimes on behalf of others.

"Writing is a way of building strength, confidence, empowerment and connection and as carers begin to speak out from behind their unseen lives, other people will be able to understand more about their contribution in society.

"Their words will become a valuable part of our national heritage, offering insight and awareness that can change and transform all our lives."

The project will initially last for six months but, if successful, funding may be sought to continue and expand the work.
