A £30,000 CAMPAIGN has been launched to support a hospital centre going through a refurbishment.

The urgent care centre is next to the accident and emergency department at the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

It is staffed by GPs and used for patients who do not need to see an A&E doctor.

The revamp is due to finish later this year and includes extra treatment areas and two more assessment spaces.

It is separate to a planned £30 million redesign of the whole A&E department approved by NHS Improvement in April.

The campaign aims to buy extra equipment and supplies on top of the ones which will already be available.

It also wants to provide extra assessment rooms called treatment pods.

The patients seen in these areas will not need a consultation bed and bulky equipment and so will be cared for in cushioned recliners.

The pods will include upgraded equipment, communication devices, and comforts.

There are also plans for rapid assessment kits to be placed in every consultation room plus seats and a television in the waiting area.

The ultimate urgent care centre campaign is run by the Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Charity and it is urging people to help by donating and fundraising throughout the summer months.

Lead nurse for the hospital’s acute floor Beverley Hales said: “The improved urgent care centre will help us to get patients to the right place as quickly as possible.

“The tools in the rapid assessment kit will make sure staff have the equipment they need right at their fingertips at all times.”
