AROUND 150 people attended a free men’s health event at the Amex.

Albion in the Community organised the event as part of its Speak Up Against Cancer campaign.

The day was hosted by Medical Imaging Partnership in its diagnostic centre in the stadium’s East Stand.

The event included mole checks carried out by Dr Russell Emerson and his colleagues from Laser and Skin Clinics in Hove.

These proved popular with 85 visitors benefitting from the free mole and skin checks.

Also on offer was advice on dealing with stress, cancer prevention support, top tips on staying fit, carbon monoxide measuring and information on maintaining a healthy blood pressure.

Staff from Sussex Bowel Cancer Screening Programme were on hand to answer questions about how the vital service is helping detect bowel cancer early.

Specialist screening practitioner Chris Penny said the event had a positive impact.

He said: “There were several people who hadn’t done their test that now say they will, so from our point of view it was very worthwhile and we enjoyed the day immensely.”

Everyone who attended was also entered into a free prize draw to win a signed Brighton and Hove Albion shirt as well as being given a voucher for 10 per cent off at the Stadium Superstore that day.

Siobhan Meaker, AITC’s health manager, was delighted to see so many people attend.

She said: “We would like to thank everyone who came along and also all the organisations that helped make the event such a success – it really illustrates how important partnership working is in reaching people with important health messages.

“Being able to stage the event at the Amex was key as it is a location that is not only familiar to many of the people who attended, but is also somewhere people enjoy visiting.”

Visitors were encouraged to complete a questionnaire about the event and 67 men said they would be actively making positive changes to their lifestyle as a result of the information they were given.

Speak Up Against Cancer is commissioned by NHS Brighton and Hove Clinical Commissioning Group and local Public Health.
