MENTAL health services staff are trying to break the world record for the longest string of bunting.

But there will also be a serious reason for doing so – and that’s to raise awareness of body image and self-esteem.

Everyone can get involved by making triangles of bunting, which will be strung together in an attempt to break the record, currently standing at 11 miles.

It is part of the Everybody campaign run by Hampshire Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service, a service provided by Sussex Partnership NHS Foundation Trust.

It is also part of Sussex Partnership’s celebrations to mark the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

Anyone, living anywhere, can take part.

It aims to celebrate and embrace everyone’s unique characteristics, traits and personalities and teach children and young people about body image and self-esteem.

Organiser Helen Dove, innovation and participation lead for Hampshire CAMHS, said: “Just as no two people are the same, no two pieces of bunting will be the same.

“We hope this project will be a celebration of difference and diversity; a reflection of strength, talent and personal expression using a creative medium.

“You could use anything you have to hand – some old sheets or curtains, a table cloth, a tea towel or perhaps simply paper or card – to express your individuality.

“Mental health and body image affect everybody so we want as many people to get involved as possible to help us raise awareness and hopefully break the record.

All bunting must be received by June 25 and should be sent to Helen Dove, Hampshire CAMHS, Avalon House, Chesil Street, Winchester, Hampshire, SO23 0HU.

Display and judging of the Great Big Bunting Off will take place on July 5 to coincide with the 70th anniversary of the NHS.

A venue will be confirmed closer to the time.
