AN assistant pub manager diagnosed with type 1 diabetes five years ago is undertaking a year of fundraising challenges to raise money for charity.

William Wheeler, 22, who works at the Railway Inn in Portslade, is supporting Diabetes UK.

He will be racking up the miles as he’s taking on one sporting event a month.

These include Rough Runner this month, Tough Mudder in May and the Commando Run in November.

William said: “This month is a bit of personal milestone as it marks five years since my diagnosis.

“There was no family history of diabetes and it came as a bolt out of the blue.

“I was in sixth form college at the time and I went from worrying about exams to worrying about my health all too quickly.

“I’ve been very strict with my control so I’m keeping healthy.

“But it’s exhausting because there are never any days off.

“It’s always there and you have to be on top of it.”

People with Type 1 diabetes cannot produce insulin.

No one knows exactly what causes it but it’s not to do with being overweight and it isn’t currently preventable.

It’s the most common type of diabetes in children and young adults, starting suddenly and getting worse quickly.

Type 1 diabetes is treated by daily insulin doses – taken either by injections or via an insulin pump.

William said: “I’ve got a lot planned this year – Diabetes UK are a great charity and I’m looking forwarding to raising lots of cash.

“The pub where I work is helping my fundraising and I want to say a big thank you to all the staff and patrons helping me reach my £1,000 target for Diabetes UK.”

Lauren Baker, regional fundraiser for Diabetes UK in Sussex, said: “Our much-needed work wouldn’t be possible without the determination and generosity of our incredible fundraisers. We are extremely grateful to William.”
