Falmer stadium: Work to start but opening delayed a year

Falmer stadium: Work starts but opening delayed a year Falmer stadium: Work starts but opening delayed a year

Work will finally begin on Brighton and Hove Albion’s new Falmer Stadium within weeks - but its grand opening has been delayed for another 12 months.

The club made a major announcement to The Argus with mixed news about the long-awaited project.

They said:

• The project WILL go ahead and major work will start in December

• Contractors the Buckingham Group have been appointed to build the stadium.

• The opening date for the stadium has had to be put back until the start of the 2011/12 football season.

• Premier League giants Manchester City, who Albion knocked out of the Carling Cup last week, will return to play one of the first matches at the ground.

Club chairman Dick Knight said: “The delay is obviously disappointing for us and it will be for the fans but this is really good news.

“In a climate where major projects are being cancelled in this city and elsewhere we are in a position where the board has the confidence to proceed.

“Let no-one be in doubt. The stadium is going ahead and supporters will see us on site by the end of the year.”

Chief executive Martin Perry said the club officially took posession of the site on the outskirts of Brighton on Monday to start an anticipated 125 year lease from Brighton and Hove City Council.

Archaeologists have already been sent to make exploratory investigations.

Major work will start in December with the widening of the Village Way access road and then excavations to lower the stadium into the landscape and build a raised bund around it.

When the ground opens it will end a 12 year stay at their temporary Withdean Stadium home for Albion.

Mr Knight said the club decided to postpone opening Falmer until 12 months after the original August 2010 target.

He said the timescale had slipped by months because of changes to legislation which meant a new planning application had to be passed.

The board of directors decided that although the ground could be ready by around December 2010 they did not want to move mid-season.

Building work also has to be scheduled around term times at the neighbouring University of Brighton campus.

Mr Perry announced that the 22,500 seater stadium would be built by the Buckingham Group, the contractors behind Milton Keynes’ Dons ultra-modern new home.

He would not disclose the value of the contract, which the firm won against two rivals. Previous estimates have put Falmer’s price at more than £60million.

Mr Knight said the club was fortunate its finances were not reliant on the troubled commercial and retail sectors, which had caused delays to proposed stadiums for Liverpool and Everton among others.

Staff at Buckingham Group have also been involved with Reading’s Madejski Stadium and redevelopment of Manchester United’s Old Trafford ground.

Kevin Underwood, the firm’s director, said: “We are delighted to have been selected. We are very aware of the club’s struggle to get permission to build it and we understand how important it is to the fans.

“It is a fantastic design and we are very conscious of the responsibility that we have been given.”

Before the stadium hosts its first competitive game it will have to stage several ramp-up events with gradually increasing capacities.

Mr Knight announced yesterday that Manchester City had agreed to be opponents for one of those games.

Albion shocked City in the Carling Cup last week, winning the David and Goliath encounter on penalties.

He said: “I approached their chairman after the match to ask whether he would consider donating their part of the match takings towards our stadium fund. He said he couldn’t but offered to bring their first team to play us at the stadium instead and we’ve taken up the offer.”

The stadium news comes after a memorable eight days for Albion fans, including the cup heroics, club director Norman Cook’s Big Beach Boutique 4 and Welsh star Robbie Savage signing on loan.

Blooming hell! Another year stuck in the rain in that lifeless hole Withdean. Whats wrong with moving mid season, surely its to the benefit of the club to get in as soon as possible? I'd love a quid for every soaking we've had over the years, it'd probably pay for Falmer.

you can't move mid season because build up events need to take place. What they are i'm not sure, youth matches etc i assume. Also what's with that City chairman?? "oh we can't possibly afford to donate our takings..."

I am not actually surprised and don't really mind, used to it now. What I do object to is being told this is good news by Dick. Get a grip pal. This is NOT good news. Can you just go and work for the Labour party now and let us have a chairman who has a degree of integrity left? Stay president of the club, or some other honourary title, but stop treating us like ignorant monkeys!

we should move mid-season and get bums on seats.Delaying it any longer is a insult to the fans.

The project WILL go ahead (Does this include the downgrading of the design to block walls and metal roof as recently reported?). It WILL be delayed for a further year (WHY?). What a waste - time to scrap this stupid plan, drop the name seagulls which belonged to the team from the Goldstone, and play on as the Withdean Wanderers and forget any aspirations of playing with the big boys again.

I think this is more due to the credit crunch and the fact Dick Knight is skint, than anything else.

We need to sack the chairman and get one with some REAL money.

"A scaremongering kick in the guts" was the editor's comment in the Walsall programme. Yet today the club is happy to use the Argus to spin its latest story!Suddenly the whole project is put back by another year- and that's "good news"!Did the club really not know this when it put out those comments? The delays on planning permission etc. were known in February, according to the Walsall programme. I'm sorry but once again the club is showing its contempt for its supporters. How many more times will we be asked to be patient while we keep buying tickets? Will it ever happen - who knoews?

The stadium will be built. The signing of Savage is an indicator of the confidence that the directors believe it will happen.
This sort of investment in the playing side would not be happening if we were staying at Withdean permanently , which would lead, inevitably, lower league football.

Do any of these comments contribute anything save for some misinformed people venting their frustration at a situation they do not understand? As Dick Knight and Martin Perry both explained there has been an enormous amount of work which has been created by events beyond the club's control. Legislation changes on an almost yearly basis in this country, particularly in the area of planning law for large developments like this. If you want to have a moan about something, perhaps you should use your vote. It's the only power you will ever have.

Keep thinking that-I for one will be eager to ram those words down your throat in 3 or 4 months time when work begins. You may have missed the fact that archaeologists have been on site prior to work commencing, do you think they'd be doing that if things weren't on track? Maybe they've found other fossils similar to yourself?

What a bitter miserablist you are-I hope you are truly devastated when the work begins in earnest in 3 or 4 months time. Get used to it: there will be a stadium on the scrag end piece of land you fools have been trying to fob off as pristine downland since the plans were first announced.

With average life expectancy for most fans alive today (blokes) being 72ish, and we've been campaigning to keep this club alive since mid-90's, many fans are literally DYING to see this stadium built. The Club had better let us scatter fan's Ashes on the pitch - it's the only way I'll see a game at this rate. I can't contemplate another season at Withdean having been a STH for past 9 years. Away games for me from now on!

Oh my God-the Sky is falling, the Sky is falling.

Try thinking about things for a minute before going off on a rant. To be in there for 2010 gives the club less than 2 years to obtain planning permission (yes, it is still needed and B&H council have received the application but haven't processed it yet), re-design the stadium to comply with the latest regulations, build the thing and obtain all of the required safety certification. We're not talking about putting up a garden shed here. Clearly you can see a way for the club to circumvent all of the legal requirements-maybe you'd like to let us all know how they can go about this?

Ramp up events would never be Albion home games-do you think the Football League/local authorities/Sussex Police/Fire and Safety Department would allow games to be played at a brand new venue that hasn't been rigorously tested?

Your anger would be more appropriately directed at LDC, FPC, Norman Baker, Ann DeVeggie, Cuttress and all of the other opponents who used their disgraceful delaying tactics who have set the club back 10 years.

The only people who actually want this stadium are the club's fans. Nobody else cares much and many activly oppose it on grounds of the whole thing riding roughshod over planning regulations, the fact that it will never be built as designed (too expensive - witness recent "re-design") and the fact that its in completely the wrong place/ Even the Estates Comittee of the University didn't want it. Personally I think its a mistake but if "honest Dick" and his bunch of merry men want to jump into that much debt then thats up to them. No skin off my nose and good luck. I will however have a real issue, and so will most of the rate payers in Brighton & Hove when we are called on to bail the thing out.
It's simply not the right time to be undertaking something this costly when there are people out there fighting to keep their jobs and a roof over their heads.

I'd of thought now is the ideal time to build the stadium providing a welcome boost to employment in the area now (builders etc.) and in the future. Of course what all these experts who predict that the stadium will never be built forget is that not only will it be a football stadium it will also incorporate an educational establishment (City College) and is thus receiving funding from various educational bodies. When built the college & the stadium will also provide employment & a boost to the local economy, as well as providing education & training to local teenagers. Sure a delay is frustrating but I take it as good news that building work will commence very soon which will be the final proof that the stadium WILL be built.

Some builders like to over estimate the time it will take so that if there are delays they can still finish in time.

I don't know if that's what the buckingham group have done, but if it is, what will happen if they finish early and it is completed in time for the start of the 2010/2011 season? Will we still have to wait because the location of home matches will need to be confirmed to the FA well before the start of the season?

seems that the club have cash to burn? so are the albion going to take another year on the withdean? as they said they need it a extra year to close it? and the changes were obviously known about a year ago , or what have the builders qouted for? surely the 6 months will cost the albion millions in interest? or is the stadium going to be used for concerts before the turf is laid?

OK, lets be realistic here - how many "extra" jobs will this create in reality? 10, 20??
City College - hmm, hairdressing courses........not to mention the fact its nowhere near the city and the transport links are poor - I can see the headlines now "Albion bosses call for improvements to bus routes"
Education and training to local teenagers - er, most of the locals should be put against the nearest wall and probably will be when the revolution comes. Perhaps they could ensure there is a car burning area included within the grounds?! Seriously we have become a nation of Sports Colleges due to government funding, which turn out.........the odd athlete or PE teacher and the rest go on to what?
A complete and utter waste of money. >IF< and its a big if, the thing ever gets built it will not be to budget, will not be to design and will be underutilised as it is in completely the wrong place. The most use this will get is by the University......

As someome who does not watch live football i really don't have a say about if it is built once the planners have agreed to it. However as a local tax payer i have a say if any of our money is promised or earmarked or switched to a project that only benifits the club and not the 250 thousand local people who do not go to a game.
Please do not keep calling this a comunity stadium as one thing is sure, this will be a venue you will have to pay through the nose to enter and being a member of the local community will gain you nothing at the turn stiles

People seem to forget that they are a company, not a national treasure. If say Amex had been stupid enough to flog off their base and made themselves homeless, I doubt that they would be allowed a chunk of the Downs, grants etc.

I would imagine Amex probably does more for the community, without having to apply for grants for their good deeds.

With the finance world in turmoil , this Government hopelessly overspent if work doesn't start by the next budget when cuts or tax rises or more borrowing (interest rate rises) are on the cards...it never will!

As part of the development process the council, as landlord, must be satisfied that the Community Stadium Ltd has secured sufficient funding, bonds,
guarantees and grants for the completion and operation of the development.

When all other projects are failing, who is loaning a skint club the money? No doubt it is the education sector with its 150million to spend and the taxpayer will become stakeholder. if the club runs at a loss we pay for it ......so more tax hikes for B&H to keep this club afloat. I would much prefer my money spent on an olympic pool or a new ice rink..improved schools etc. And a community stadium would include all sports, not handing a lease of 125 years exclusively to a football club!!!
