Work starts on Falmer stadium

It’s a sight Albion supporters have waited more than a decade to see.

Diggers were yesterday churning up the earth at Village Way North, Falmer, as contractors got to work on the club’s £65 million stadium.

The Buckingham Group took over the site earlier this month, and an official handover ceremony will take place tomorrow.

Fans who won a lottery draw will be taken to the site by bus from Withdean to witness the historic moment.

Paul Samrah, the chairman of the Falmer For All campaign, said: “To see work already started is truly momentous.

“It really is the beginning of the end of our fight.

“We have had so many setbacks but now we can actually see it with our own eyes.

“It’s fantastic and a testament to all the hard work thousands of people have put in over the years.”

It is a wonderful day for the Albion, we have all waited so long for this day. Lets hope we don't go to the Stadium and watch opponents such as Rochdale and Mansfield. Lets hope we can stay in League 1 at least when we are in this stadium.
UP the Albion!!

ABOUT TIME.

I expect a 40 year delay, though. Probably because Starbucks opened without permission and an old lady got hit by a bus and couldn't get her rib removed on the NHS.

Did like Paul Samrah's beautifully understated “To see work already started is truly momentous." Already? It's been ten years! No seriously, good to see something happening in real terms and it is a tribute to the dedication of our much maligned chairman. let's hope we can build a team over the next few years that gets, justifies and maintains the huge support that Falmer will make possible.

So, the bulldozers move in at last ... and the Falmer landscape is grubbed up to provide - what? A place where a half-empty stadium can witness a few men kicking a piece of leather? Or even worse gridlock around our city on match days? Or - most likely of all in the current economic climate - a massive scar on the landscape, left behind when the money ran out and the last bloke in a bulldozer was paid off?

This is not a good day. It's a sad day, when we finally witness a triumph of infantilism and self-delusion. We're destroying Falmer to feed this delusion, and we'll never get it back.

As a society and a city, we need to grow up.

the club actually has a very large fan base, most of whom cannot get a ticket to withdean. all they need now is a bit of luck on the pitch, and they will easily get 15000+ at falmer. although i don't get there now, i always follow their results and wish the team well. i have been waiting for this day, and if they are at home when i visit brighton, i will make the effort to get there.

really the club have only sold out around twice in two seasons, so how many tried to gets tickets friday, gate was 56oo and capacity is around the 9000, the only way we will get 15000 is by being a championship side, that means investmant in the club , not just playing in the championship, form the youth set up, to the way tickets are sold and advertised, a shake up is needed, or the stadium will have more people there watching concerts.

It is people like you that are a stain on BHAFC. This city needs a new stadium to be in the 21st century and it is NIMBYism talk such as this that prevents development and progress that this stadium will bring. You are definitely a minority view in this city.
The stadium is being built in a BROWN PLOUGHED FIELD not an area of AONB at all, and how will it cause congestion in the city centre when it is on the perimeter?

I agree Monty, I'm not a football fan (at all, sorry!) but I'm glad the supporters have their own stadium once again, it gives families & children something to look forward to, as for congestion, it will be far less than when they were based in old shoreham road, that used to be gridlocked, now they will be off a major dual carriageway, and next to a train station, perfect location!

Nimby's ruin Brighton unfortunately, and as for the Falmer Village & Lewes lot who opposed it, hahahaha, losers!!

The relatively new Kassam Stadium in Oxford also has a multiplex cinema, bowling alley and some places to eat, a hotel and a great car-boot sale on Sundays! It makes the site less likely to be a white elephant - when football matches aren't on and its a great place for famlies to spend time. I wonder will Falmer get add ons in later years? ps send a Starbucks (or burger king) to the Hollingbury shopping estate - man that place needs somewhere to eat and drink.

I work near the site & I am so pleased they have finally started working on the stadium as a footy supporter.

It looks no worse than all the building work that has happended in the last few years for the uni's.

Make you're mind up. It's either going to be half empty or there's going to be gridlock??

First it was an AONB. Until someone pointed out that southern water had a sewage works there, someone had built not 1, but two massive universities there, and that the ground would be built next to the motorway next to Brighton Poly (uni -sorry).

Then it was - "but tey only get 6,000 and have no history." This until someone pointed out the cub won the Charity Shield points out, played in the top flight (now premier league) an f.a. cup final, and has had spells like the 70's when 25 to 35,000 ere the order of the day, and even in the lowest tier of football was pulling in 10K.What a club we will have, just look at the towns of sussex and the rural areas too, what a catchment area, fro bognor, to worthing to brighton to newhaven docks to eastbourne to hastings, to burgess hill to crawley, all traditional Albion areas. Just amazing what could be achieved at this club

Now its - "dont let taxpayers pay anything". Its odd, in Australia sport stadia is paid for by the city and a link up with sport and schools is the norm and to me, sounds like a great idea. Still some POMS are never happier unless they are having a whine, whinge and moan.

By the way, do we really have to pay taxes for the arts council. Football pays for itself, its about time the arts started dont we think.. or do we..?

Hard cheese Mr Baker, LDC, and the geography teacher types that like to try and look down their noses at football.

Where are Mr Archer, Mr Stanley and Mr Bellotti now? More importantly can we make sure they are "banned for life" from Falmer - just to make the point.
