Falmer Stadium
In December 2008, work finally started on the Seagull's new 22,500 seat stadium at Falmer. It is the culmination of years of uncertainty during which fans thought they may never see their beloved club find a new home. But their victory left villagers who had campaigned against the disappointment sorely disappointed.
The West Pier and i360
The historic West Pier in Brighton was declared beyond salvation by English Heritage and the Heritage Lottery Fund in July 2004. They withdrew their backing for restoration plans following two devastating years of storms and fires which reduced the Grade I listed former masterpiece to a pile of scrap metal. Now, ambitious plans to build the highest tower in Sussex in its place are taking shape.

King Alfred development
Karis' controversial plans to replace King Alfred Leisure Centre in Hove with a sports complex and two tower blocks of flats designed by "celebrity" architect Frank Gehry provoked fierce debate for years before finally being abandoned in November 2008. South Downs National Park
The striking landscape which dominates Sussex has overcome its final hurdle and has now been designated a national park. The public inquiry into the Countryside Agency's proposals ended in December 2004. Campaigners who have battled for 50 years to secure park status are celebrating their victory.
