King Alfred flumes on the way out

Demolition work at Hove’s King Alfred leisure centre will start this week to remove the outdoor flumes.

The three slides, including one called The Black Hole, were installed at the centre in the 1980s.

They were closed to the public eight years ago because of safety fears. The demolition work is expected to take about eight weeks.

Brighton and Hove City Council said “minimum disruption”

would occur and the main building would operate as normal throughout.

The demolition has been agreed by the council as part of a £1.5 million package of safety and maintenance works to ensure the King Alfred stays open for the immediate future.

Long-term options for the site are being considered.

I bet they close the whole seafront road from Saltdean to Southwick for eight weeks.

What firm is being employed to carry out this work?

Lets hope its a local company (Sussex at least) given the current climate - i expect a few of the 600 Sussex workers from Woolies might help out early next year. Unlike the bandstand refurbishment which seems to have been given to a Derbyshire company!!

Closed 8 years ago over 'safety fears'!! they were perfectly safe if they had been maintained properly....what it really meant was that the lifeguards couldn't see you and blow their bloody whistles at you while you were inside them...

i was in the pool with my kids a few years back having fun. as you do, they jumped in and went under the bridge chasing me in the water...it was like an orchestra of whistles...i told one of them hat they might find themselves choking on their whistle if they weren't careful. and the call it a 'fun pool' pfftt
