Updated: Eight arrested at Brighton May Day protests Updated: Eight arrested at Brighton May Day protests

An alliance of protest groups took to the streets of Brighton and Hove today for an early May Day protest.

Groups protesting at the May Day “street party and protest” event included Smash EDO, South Coast Climate Camp, Brighton Uncut, Brighton Anarchist Black Cross, Sussex Industrial Workers of the World, No Borders Brighton, Squatters' Network of Brighton, Brighton AntiFascists, Brighton Hunt Saboteurs, students, Queer Mutiny Brighton and Brighton Benefits Campaign.

Previous demonstrations by the same groups had seen big-name shops, banks and restaurants become targets for vandalism or invasion.

The protest began on the seafront near the West Pier at midday.

Over the day police estimate about 200 people took part, and a similar number of police.

Organisers rolled a dice marked with locations in the town to decide where to target first.

The demonstration started as a march, which was "kettled" in Duke Street for some time, before splitting up into several smaller groups.

Parts of the city centre were filled with police vans and lines of officers over the afternoon as protesters ranged through the streets.

The event appeared to have finished by about 4pm, but a group of demonstrators later gathered outside Topshop and Vodafone in Western Road.

They too were "kettled" before being searched by police and escorted to Churchill Square.

Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett said: "We are happy to facilitate peaceful protest and welcome people coming to the city to express their views.

"Despite public appeals by ourselves and other people to the organisers to consider the consequences of their actions on the local community and businesses, they failed to co-operate and have been intent on causing disruption.

"They refused to follow a procession and broke off into several smaller groups making it difficult for police to provide a safe and secure environment for protesters and the public.

"This was the second protest over the two bank holiday weekends and the actions of the protesters could have impacted on shops and businesses during a difficult financial time.

"We have to balance the rights of the protesters and the rights of others who want to go about their everyday business."

A statement from Sussex Police said eight people were arrested.

They were: a 25-year-old man, who refused to provide his address, on suspicion of violent disorder following the TUC march in London last month; a 23-year-old man from Chiselhurst, Kent, on suspicion of using threatening and abusive language; a 22-year-old woman from Macclesfield, Cheshire and a 28-year-old man from Brighton, both on suspicion of failing to remove face masks; a 30-year-old man, who refused to provide his address, on suspicion of assaulting and obstructing police; a 25-year-old man, who refused to give his address, on suspicion of assault, obstructing and resisting a police officer; an 18-year-old man, who refused to give his address, on suspicion of common assault and using abusive language; a 28-year-old man from Brighton on suspicion of failing to surrender alcohol.

"Balancing" the basic human right to protest against the greed of bosses trying to make a fast buck. You couldn't make this stuff up. What next? Torturing people to make them buy more stuff?

Protestors hiding their faces ! Nothing 'Peaceful' about them is there.
SO i do hope the usual don't bleet on about Rights to Protest.

Anyway, doesn't the dice with the names of companies that they are going to attack show their intentions.

They are not Peace protestors, they are thugs who want to smash things up and have a pop at the Old Bill.

"Balancing" the basic human right to protest against the residents of the city to go about their everyday lives. It's vey noticeable many of those arrested either wouldn't give their address or aren't from Brighton. Many others were too cowardly to show their face instead preferring to hide behind maks. Please go away and annoy another city next time - I know "demonstrating" ( it isn't really ! ) in this city gives you the chance to then have a nice long weekend in a party town but you're not welcome or wanted.

This is a new one! Do you think for one minute that the police would arrest someone for wearing a burka or a Hijab?
No of course they wouldnt!
There will be a lot more civil unrest when people realise that the old, sick and disabled are taking the brunt of the Condem cuts.

I observed this march for a couple of hours just to see what its all about, I went completely impartial and open minded, I was shocked at the behaviour of the protesters, constantly foul language, goading police officers(who seemed to have patience of saints) and also a large number of them seemed under the influence of drink or drugs.
At one point a woman pushing a pram was shoved aside by the protesters nearly causing the pram to topple over.
I understand what these people stand for and i agree with alot of what they have to say but all i saw today was a crowd of smelly dirty lowlifes wanting to cause trouble and I think the most common comment from passers by was ''whats this all about?" , i dont think they achieved anything other than alienating themselves from the general public

I shouldn't need to be writing this, as if legislation was appropriate this whole bunch of miscreants could have been detained and constrained allowing the other 200K population of Brighton to enjoy their sunny Saturday. But instead it seems we are happy to allow the disengaged minority to determine the values and behaviors that everyone else then has to then live with. And even worse we do so wearing kid gloves. A number of people I met today were astounded that the police did not use truncheons to sort the issues much sooner. I fear that if this is allowed to happen again that people may take matters into their own hands!

Yes. It costs millions in benefits to keep one family in a dozen palaces with one 85 year old lady 'trapped in too much space' having to rely on hand outs to heat her 661 rooms in her usual residence.

Absolutely. The majority of B&H residents are decent hard working tax payers and these vermin give our city a bad name. With democracy and free speech comes responsibilities. That includes following the rules laid down for protests and respecting the other peoples right to go about their business unhindered. In this case 200 people, many hiding their faces and shouting obscenities, protested without adhering to those rules in a city with over a thousand times the people their pathetic protest managed to muster. They are not welcome here and should go back to their universities and actually study.

Since the police use this rhetoric, they really will have to accept the argument.

With democracy comes responsibilities - such as the responsibility to stand up for others fighting back for their basic liberties against the police-state. If you don't exercise these responsibilities, democracy dies. This is why it's largely dead in Britain already - because people like you want the benefits of democracy without the tolerance it entails.

I wonder if the Police would have to Police us too or would they keep that lot away. We should be the 'Brightonians Peoples Front' with nothing to do with those 'splitters'. We should go to their usual haunt (Cowley Club, London Road) and treat that place with the same contempt that they have for all the buildings they smash up!

Anyway, one question to all; Since when did we have 'Hunts' in Brighton? I have yet seen anyone wearing Red on Horse back, chasing urban foxes through the streets tooting on their horns with dogs following.... So yet another protesting name that means nothing. Good old Brighton Hunt Saboteurs!

Why should i stand up to a Police State? THere isn't one.

Your views are misguided. I think you'll find that the Police not only enforce the law against people but they also help and protect people and their property as required to do so to maintain a Peaceful society or the Queens Peace.
What your talking about is taking the law into your own hands which breaks the law to which we all live under. Regardless of a comment you want to write about this statement remember that each country has their own laws and the general public and visitor obey those laws. All laws are similar where ever you go! eg: You can't kill anyone, you can't steal whats not yours, break/damage whats not yours, harm any one etc etc.

Your rant is a rant. It reminds me of Obi-wan Kenobi 'v' Anakin Skywalker in Star Wars 3. Your thoughts are not of good, they are clouded and misguided and you views are that of the Dark Side of the force! Next you'll be saying that i'm part of the rebel alliance and a traitor, and then ordering one of your minions to take me away, just because i woun't conform to your ideals.

If you don't like whats going on around you, LEAVE! Leave the UK. Someone in the middle-east might want you!

MikhailBakunin says...
11:20pm Sat 30 Apr 11

We do not "all live under the law", it is the whim of the state and the ruling class elite. It does not create a "peaceful society", at present it creates police terror against dissidents and nonconformists of all kinds. If you have seen the way riot police behave, you would not be calling them "peaceful". Nor was it "peaceful" to invade Iraq when everyone was against it. This is not a peaceful society, this is a society dominated by extreme authoritarian forces which are waging a constant social war against dissent. You are acting as a propaganda agent on behalf of the police-state waging this war.

Police arrested 55 people for the royal wedding, all but 5 arrested without charge. They were arrested because they were suspected of being proetsters. Police have been "kettling" people today - detaining without charge or trial. These are fascistic human rights violations, therefore police state. If you don't see a police state in Britain then your eyes must be sewn shut. There is police terror on the streets, hundreds of thousands of stops and searches per year, ASBOs banning acts which aren't criminal, people being jailed for "blackmail" just for running campaigns, 200 Muslims in jail for having the wrong political views, student protesters getting 3-year sentences while police who murdered Ian Tomlinson walk free. If it acts like a police state then it's a police state, and if you don't fight it then you're an enemy of freedom.

As to your worship of the "law". In Nazi Germany, it was the law to turn Jews over to the state - it was still absolutely wrong to do so. People have every right to cause damage to fight back against corporations which are committing greater crimes such as building bombs, destroying the planet and evading millions in tax. If you don't condone this then you're a sheep.

And as for leaving, your ilk have ruined the ENTIRE world, so it's not an option any more. As you say, "laws are the same wherever you go" - obey the companies and the thugs in uniform - so why bother leaving? It's the same fight for freedom everywhere. It was not always this way - you would find the contents of indigenous customs vary a lot from your extreme-right model of law for example - but today the capitalists have seized control of the world and homogenised it in their image. We are not going to leave, we are going to fight, until you and your ilk go the way of Hitler and Mussolini.

"Bakunin enjoyed his time in America, claiming that "the most imperfect republic is a thousand times better than the most enlightened monarchy". What is the difference in people having religious beliefs and believing in other causes? A major problem is they were stopping people having fun. Nothing can be done thesedays unless people are having fun. They cannot give to charity unless they are having fun. All lesson in schools must be fun. We have a factory that makes bombs in Lewes Rd (Factually incorrect but why let facts get in the way of a misguided mission) yet nobody else cares?! (Again factually incorrect but most of us contribute in other more practical ways such as giving through church, charities, lobbying & voting!)

Believe me, B&H was once a lovely and safe town to live. But since it has been infected with Trotskyite filth (staying on students, drifters and Labour infiltrators) it has become a sad reflection of its former self.

Hopefully after they have all been driven out, it will regain its cheerful self once again.

Tell me again when your dissent is imposed on people against their will, what legitimacy does it have? Imposing your minority views on the majority through violence harrasment and intimidation is wrong. What does that make you when you do that? How many people joined your cause today because of your demo? None in fact you have just driven more people away. You were so busy thinking tactically that you lost site of your objective, to get people on your side. Instead of which you just ran around on an ego trip causing as much disruption as you could.

Well , I attended the march with a couple of colleagues after a hard night shift. I was not affiliated to any group but was exercising my lawful right to peacefully protest against the up coming cuts and possible loss of my job. When asked by members of the public what was I doing I explained this and got a lot of support and cheers. I then fell into conversation with a lovely police man walking along side me who explained to me about their fears of all the cuts and how the "local" police force was going to be restructured as to be based in Haywards Heath. With the loss of around 500 officers. And I quote "I for 1 agree with you and I know a lot of other officers patrolling this march do too." :)

@suxinthecity

But how do you feel about your march being hijacked by obvious members of the black block movement ? I am all for our right to march and to demonstrate. However, with this march there was no common goal, no dialogue with authorities to confirm your intentions and no overall message in which to promote your cause. It was a mess, it looked a mess, the people attending were to put it bluntly, not the type of people who I want representing the message of 'there is a better world' - Everyone here should do some research into the make up of this march. Black Block ideals are firmly planted in violence and vandalism. They're an anarchist anti-establishment and anti-capitalist movement. I would genuinely like to offer an alternative march in which genuine interest groups can take part and a peaceful, family day can be arranged in which a common cause can be identified. Real workers rights, not 'squatters rights', not 'hunt sabatours' (as far as I know hunting has been banned for years). If anyone can arrange this I think the movement will gain far more sympathy from the general public than the mess that occurred yesterday.

@Wiggum I can honestly say I don't think it was "hijacked" by Black Block. Yes there was a lot of running around (by the younger fitter demonstrators). I did see a number of "clowns" protesting outside various shops that have been called into question re: tax avoidance. But that was more theatrical fun based protesting.Very Brighton. Like I said I wasn't affiliated to any group so I can't comment there. I found out about it after work and decided to join up. But yes I do agree that next time a bit more notice and structure wouldn't go amiss then we could all juggle our shifts to attend :)

@Wiggum You can hardly say a demonstration organised by anarchist and anti-capitalist groups has been "hijacked" by anarchists and anti-capitalists now can you? Although it was hardly black block. I think a sense of perspective might be in order here, some of the comments read like half of the town centre was burnt to the ground by rampaging mobs of baby eating barbarians...

Around 200 people had a demonstration to mark Mayday and oppose the cuts, nothing was smashed up, nobody was hospitalised, there were a few arrests for minor offences, and some temporarily inconvenienced shoppers....

, you are living in a matrix organised by SmashEdo, Edo in Brighton does not make bombs, you are wrong about that, stop lying. The use of Edos products against the Palestinians has never been proved. Your violence and fanaticism does great harm to the Palestinian cause, it makes it easier for people to paint all Palestinians and their supporters as violent fanatics who cannot be reasoned with, thats why I oppose you and your methods, because I genuinely support the Palestinians and you make it harder to plead their cause. Tell me again how did smashing up parts of the palace pier a couple of years ago help the people in Gaza? Did the Palestinians sleep safer in their beds that night knowing a bunch of fantatics had attacked a McDonalds on their behalf? SmashEdo only started linking Edo to Israel when they realised how deperately unpopular they were and decided to cynically try and use the Palestinians as a way of boosting their support.

you are aware that protests occur in other areas of the country right? you might have heard of rather a large one in London recently. There were anti student fee protests in all the places you mention as "not putting up with it" just a few months ago. There's nothing particularly special about Brighton or the approach of Sussex police to these things...

sambreroyo says...
1:22pm Sun 1 May 11

As someone who runs a business in the centre of Brighton, I can say that these protests have lost all meaning. What was once a voice to be heard and held importance in educating and making a stand is now an excuse to cause trouble and create chaos.
The lack of communication with a willing police force speaks volumes.
The people of Brighton have listened but these constant protests are just now becoming a nuisance. Stopping bus services on a busy day, being rowdy and uncooperative and generally being abusive is not going to achieve anything other then a loss of support.
I for one will not show any support to anyone who threatens violence or spews abuse.
There was no clear message or protest yesterday and some of the verbal attacks on police just made me lose any sympathy for anyone protesting.
Small businesses are being affected by these constant 'protests' and protesters need to realise the damage they are causing.

The protesters holding "Free Palestine" placards showed off their limited knowledge of the real nature of oppression in the Middle East. They should have been carrying "Free Syria, Bahrain, Tunisia, Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Saudi Arabia, and Iran" banners - and always should have. Meanwhile their little protest in Brighton has been carried as a significant news story on Iranian TV to suggest the oppression that we in England suffer. We had relatives come from Wales to visit us yesterday. It was their first time in Brighton, so we took them for a walk through town, show them the city, get some food, do some shopping etc.

It wasn't until we got closer to town that we started noticing the heavy police presence - then suddenly a group of about 25 people in masks came racing towards us, hurling abuse at the Police and physically pushing three of us out of their way - including a 5 year old child.

The kids were upset so we decided to avoid the centre, scrap the shopping plans and head to Pavillion Gardens to grab some food and get out of these people's way.

When we got there, there was another group of people - none of whom looked either sober or hygenic - shouting and swearing at everyone that walked past. Hardly getting any sympathy from the public either!

My young cousins were scared stiff so we decided to head home to calm them down.

Not only did these protestors succeed in driving us out of town - and away from the smaller businesses and restaurants in the Laines which we'd intended on visiting - but also ruined the day for my family - who left Brighton this morning with a pretty negative impression of the place.

I admire the Police's efforts in facilitating people's right to peaceful protest etc, but when these 'people' stop playing by the rules, and end up intimidating the public and hindering local business - the response should be to revoke the protest rights and put their batons to use as they would anywhere else in mainland europe.

I don't think UK Uncut say they are doing anything illegal, that's not really the point. The claim is that those companies use loopholes in tax regulations (and their political influence) to avoid paying vast amounts of corporation tax, and that if those tax avoidence schemes were closed down, a lot of public services facing funding cuts could be saved...

And the bombed kids in Israel are worthless are they?

I hope the factory makes more explosives because the UK will need them when we rid ourselves of worthless left wing trash like you.
As people never tire of pointing out, the EDO factory makes bomb release mechanisms, amongst other things, not explosives. So I'm afraid sussexladybabe will have to find other sources of munitions for her fantasy civil war where people are apparently to be murdered for having left wing political views...
Pinochet would be proud of you. Sigh.

I am in shock at the middle class condemnation on this site for the demonstrations taking place in Brighton recently. The people protesting are attempting to make a point against the hideously unfair cuts imposed by Government and in contrast, its inefficiency in bringing huge corporate tax avoiders to justice. Perhaps try coming down from your ivory towers for once and having some empathy for the communities that will suffer most as a result.

Also - in regards to the comments regarding the EDO factory: Aren't bomb release mechanisms a necessary component in triggering bomb release? Don't bombs kill people? I fail to see your point.

Thanks to The Argus once again for their terrible reporting on the issue. God forbid that any form of moral dissent should inconvenience the middle class of Brighton.

bladesboy says...
5:00pm Sun 1 May 11

Dear Neofab, things are rarely what they may seem.

I don't actually think its the middle class on the site, making the comments you refer to. It's working class people like me who work hard every day, contributing positively to society that are fed up with a small minority of tossers ruining everything. I suspect that in the main these protesters are a bunch of upper class toff's who have been given the opportunity to study some of the historical contentions between wealth and oppression and due to lack of intellect cant resolve the fact that nothing is black and white, just grey. As a consequence this has probably caused mental instability, which no doubt fueled by drugs and alcohol (paid for by the tax payer directly or indirectly, or both) and has caused this unacceptable behavior. Get em all banged up, or back to mummy and daddy's!

Oh yes and the next book to study should be 'The Emperor's New Clothes'; read it soon and wake up and smell the coffee

Finally lets have some names and facial pictures (after a wash and hair cut) so we know who to engage!?

Such an easy way to demarcate yourselves from these dissenters isn't it? You the clean, righteous and moral, the rest "filthy", "smelly", "unclean", "scum".

I'm glad you can find satisfaction in contributing positively to the project of this corrupt society, indeed the blinkered five day week routine is arguably the easiest option.

As many of the smash edo protestors are gay, they should be aware gays are persecuted in gaza, along with feminists and secularists.
Their next protest should be outside the Syrian, Libyan & Bahrain embasies, where 1,000's of protestors have been shot, just for daring to protest.

Argus, once you have given video evidence of this request!!!! ... can we then have some coverage of the excessive use of foul language used towards the Police whilst the protestors were walking around Brighton on a busy weekend.
Can you show the reaction of families who turned around and walked away from these protestors. Can we see the anger and hatered on the faces of the protestors (those without masks) who abuse the Police.
Then can we have coverage of when they rolled the dice to decide where to pick on and try to cause damage which shows intent in their criminal activites!
Then can we see who the Police, when they make an arrest, are attacked by other protestors trying to get their 'friends' away from them.

Oh and on the linking arms bits, lets see behind the protestors banners to see how reinforced they are to smash through the Police and general public who get in their way.

I can also vouch for four adults who - as a direct result of this march - did not spend any of our hard earned money in Brighton's shops and restaurants.

Wonder how you'd feel if they decide to disrupt sunny Horsham next year instead - and push and shout at your family??

A bit of protest here might be quite nice to wake people up from their torpor - why should Brighton get it all.

Only shouting I saw was at the police and the very occasional abusive passer-by who only got back as good as they gave. Maybe you were one of them - I don't know. Most passers-by were either indifferent or supportive to varying degrees.

Glad you've moderated your language.

It's a disgusting way to behave. By using violence you lose. I don't care about your "cause" because you're now ruining it for the majority. You're losing your voice and making people angry and fed up. You guys are in the minority. Most people are realistic enough to see that capitalism works. Without it you guys wouldn't have your benefits.

You think this is a police state??? Get a grip. Go and google "police state".

Champagne socialists, absolute bigots. Met a few in my life time, all had their inheritance from mummy/daddy yet bleat on about how all inheritance should go to the state, sorry but my parents worked to earn that money so should choose exactly where it goes, definitely not into your sponging pockets.

Stop being such hypocrits and take a good look at the country you actually live in that allows you your freedom.

Violent, rude protestors deserve everything they get from the police. Don't complain about being "kettled" when you should be well aware of the consequences to your actions.

I am not a 'posh boy'. I am from Croydon , one of Londons least posh subberbs.
Hi Folks, Please please ignore my last comment. My 'hilarious' mate decided to post under my name after I had just logged in. What I was going to say was that Living in the real world is really showing his true colours now and is a nasty piece of work. Tip: Never leave your PC unattended when you go to the loo!!!!! Excuse me while I now slap him!
Or perhaps you're posting slightly violent comments making it look like they're coming from a genuine protester.
Oh dear, just because I don't agree with your views you resort to accusations like this - very sad and a cheap shot. Unlike this idiot I can spell and clearly had an education. If you look at some of my other posts you'll know that I live and work in Brighton (that's why I care about my city getting smashed up by protesters).
Yea we believe you Amboguy. If it was your mate why did he make the comment he did? You have to admit it looks a bit weird. And just bcos the speling aint write dosn't meen its some one else.
Because he thought it would be funny Rose. I was telling him about this SmashEDO idiot and all the stupid comments he'd been making. He saw his chance and did it as a wind up as that's the kind of stuff he does for kicks.
I can see that humour (whether it's any good or not) clearly doesn't feature much in your life and I'm sorry that's the case.

Bless you dear. I can assure you I have plenty of humour and many other good things in my life (in case you're worried).

But I still can't quite see why he said what he actually said and how it makes it a wind up.

Other mailing lists have been shown to have been contributed by people (sometimes police) posing as activists making extreme statements.

Just to vindicate you probably worth me contacting the Argus and if they agree it looks a bit strange they can quickly check the IP Addresses then we can see if you and "Living in the real world" really are one and the same. He does seem to have gone very quiet anyway. If it really was your mate then it'll be no problem.

Rose Rose it isn't a problem - calm down dear. Ok you contact The Argus and let me know anyway, you're taking this very seriously you need to relax. If you can't see why a mate (also a work collegue) would post to make out I was a slightly chavvy protester (no offence) then maybe you should ask a freind to explain it to you. Has Living in... gone quiet? He's only put a few posts up (albeit all of them stupid) on this forum so I don't really think so.
Anyway, as I said in my last post, please try to keep on topic. Do you have anything more to contribute to the discussion?

Dear I'm the epitome of calm. It's quite possible your work mate was the one posting as "Living in the real world" and then forgot what computer he was on.

But anyway. It's out of my hands now so I need say or do no more.

AmboGuy says...

Hmm clutching at straws there Rose eh?
Anyway I'll bring us back on topic then shall I as you seem to have no interest contributing anymore.
I think that the protesters sometimes need to think what would they think if this was THEIR home town? I'm sure some are from B&H but lots aren't. How would they like it if it was their city constantly being brought to a standstill? I live here so I have to see the mayhem caused and the damage and rubbish left behind. I simply don't understand why they can't pick any other big places to protest, Eastbourne or Hastings for example??? I really don't wish this on those places but why is it ALWAYS Brighton? As one of the previous comments said he had family over and they witnessed disgusting behaviour from some of these protesters. It really doesn't make me proud to be a resident here sometimes when idiots like this constantly protest here.

But what point are you trying to make? That's the real failure of the protests - I am genuinely unclear what point was trying to be made.
Surely SmashEDO is not actually anti-weapons (it would naive to the point of stupidity to believe we should abolish weapon production) so presumably it is more pro Palestine, anti-Israel then? Wouldn't it make sense then to focus on that? Protest outside the Israeli embassy. Form pressure groups on MPs who actually make decisions about military action (hint these decisions don't rest with the Brighton branches of Sainsbury's).
Also as pointed out above, why not other Middle Eastern concerns?
I picked up some ecological concerns (but again what specifics are being requested).
Then there are the protests against cuts. Okay fine, but what alternatives would you like? Simply NO cuts? How would that work? There have to be cuts somewhere.
I will support an alternative to public sector cuts if it is a viable one - but what is being proposed?
Ultimately an unfocused protest by a minority (and at the moment it is a minority) is going to achieve nothing. Even less if they add violence.
The attempt to cast themselves in the light of heroic fighters for freedom just doesn't work without some form of viable alternatives being suggested.
The net result of this march is surely absolutely zero towards any of the concenrs being raised, and probably overall a alienating the average people on the street.

"Living in the real world" clearly does not support NVDA which lays at the foundation of all the groups demonstrating on Saturday. So I wouldn't ask him.

Ashles says...
1:35pm Tue 3 May 11

So NVDA are at the foundation of the protests... yet we don't know who they are or what they stand for?
Is that correct?

Ashles says...
1:37pm Tue 3 May 11

I have just checked the report - they mention:
Smash EDO, South Coast Climate Camp, Brighton Uncut, Brighton Anarchist Black Cross, Sussex Industrial Workers of the World, No Borders Brighton, Squatters' Network of Brighton, Brighton AntiFascists, Brighton Hunt Saboteurs, students, Queer Mutiny Brighton and Brighton Benefits Campaign...... but no NVDA.

Rose Watson says...
1:50pm Tue 3 May 11

NVDA = Non-Violent Direct Action. A little bit of browsing these groups' sites and material and you'll usually find reference to NVDA. It's an under-lying philosophy behind protest actions so not likely to be mentioned in any Argus article.

From his posts "Living in the real world" doesn't seem to understand the "non-violent" bit so not sure he's the best person to ask about their other aims and beliefs.

Ashles says...
1:59pm Tue 3 May 11

Then it's doubly unfortunate that these protests are being hijacked by a small minority of violent protesters and linking the protests with potential violence and destruction.
I ask you the same questions then.
What are the specific goals or aims of the protest?

Rose Watson says...
2:28pm Tue 3 May 11

If you're referring to the post anyone can post on here so it is simply not possible to jump to that conclusion based on the post of an idiot.

Violence was initiated by the police who are trained in such ways. I've seen it time after time. People repeatedly make claims about protests being unpopular (see earlier post by JHunty and its rebuttal) or being violent but I have yet to see any evidence.

As for the goals and aims - although I am broadly sympathetic to some of the groups I was merely a by-stander so do not feel qualified to comment on their behalf. Frankly I don't know what their aims were on that day and I'm sure the aims of individual groups varied so I can't possibly speak for them.

However I can say as an individual and on my own behalf that it as important to exercise our right to protest and from what I saw and later been told and seen on video there would have been a lot less disruption if the police had not been so heavy handed and stopped the march in its tracks thus increasing the tension and anger of both protesters and passers-by. The horses and police forming a line in Churchill Square was pure farce.

They'll never give you an answer to that I'm afraid. I've asked countless times what they hope to achieve, what their overall message is and I get politicians answers. They'll avoid answering me, answer my question with their own question or just pretend they didn't see it. You're bashing your head against a brick wall if you think they'll answer you.

I sense this thread has finally reached its natural end, although as I have suggested that know that a small number of tossers will feel the need to comment to the contrary.

My personal summary of what I have heard and gleaned is that there are a small number of faceless, mindless morons, who cant specify what their issues and hopes are and accordingly don't understand why people aren't listening to them and have become disengaged.

Their solution is both naive and ridiculous as without that clarity of purpose and reasoned argument they are failing to influence and gain support from others and indeed have further marginalised themselves by their posh kid playground actions.

The good news for all is as they grow older they will inherit huge wealth (they are all posh kids) and will mysteriously forget about their previous causes and no doubt the few working class chums they had made and all has gone before.

The bad news is that in many cases their children will have no discipline and will lack common decency and will fill the gap their parents leave behind.............

Oh joy, cant wait to watch the cycle repeat itself.

I am still as keen as mustard to have facial photo's of the disengaged so we can maybe show our appreciation of them if we have the fortune of bumping into them in the street.

Could we please? No of course not, faceless, mindless morons wouldn't want that!

THE END!

Ah, bless. How utterly predictable. Bladesboy has interjected throughout this thread with various threats; Tried to rally football 'hooligans' against the protesters; Branded others as class stereotypes; Made comments against someone based on the colour of their hair; Randomly used the term 'Wake up and smell the coffee' towards the entire thread at least 3 times; Yet again recommended that people read a children's story book that has very little relevance to the thread (as he does in almost every thread)
- And now, because he thinks that it is a) his job as self appointed moderator, and b) due to a strange obsessive compulsive disorder of which he seems to suffer, he thinks that by shouting 'THE END!' he can have the last word.
So very foolish.... if only he realised how much he regularly contradicts his own forum 'ground rules' that he often slates everybody else for breaking, regardless of whether their opinions fall on his side of the argument or not. No doubt i will be branded a public school posho for pointing this out... oh, if only you knew.... hahaha.
