SmashEDO protesters gather outside Barclays Bank in Brighton
Anti-arms group Smash EDO is marching through central Brighton to Hove today (June 4) over the possibility of military action against Iran.
The protesters are gathering outside Barclays bank in North Street at noon, then planning to march along Western Road to Hove Town Hall Their event is aimed at opposing “the prospect of war with Iran”.
A spokesman for the group said: “It is important that we build an anti-war movement that learns the lessons of the Iraq war in order to prevent further bloodshed.”
Previous Smash EDO events have ended in confrontations with police.
But today's demonstration passed peacefully, with no arrests.
Chief Superintendent Graham Bartlett, the Sussex Police city commander for Brighton and Hove, said: "This is the first time this group had shared their plans in an open letter to the media and I'm pleased to say it went as outlined. Police have an important role to help facilitate those who exercise their right to free speech in a peaceful way and we did that today."
Argus reporter Ben Parsons Tweeted live from the protest from noon. Additional Tweets from Sussex Police and SmashEDO, and comments from readers, are also included in the live blog below.

Times are hard enough without these wasters putting people off going into town.
So anyone from SmashEDO could you tell me - is this the 'final final push' or just another 'final push'? I only ask as you seem to have had about 3 'final pushes' so far.

It would be interesting to hear what the local traders think about this mob going on yet another pointless march and keeping people away from the centre.

Then I suppose the weather will start getting really bad and it won't be so easy to disrupt without getting wet and windblown.

Clearly you haven't though very much then because there's a trader saying the contrary. But then, what would he know?
"we achieved exactly what we wanted" So it's official then. We won't attack Iran. Ever! (Not that we were ever going to but why let the facts get in the way of some scaremongering). Anyway, now that you've accomplished that aim and Iran is safe will your next demonstration be to do the same with Syria?

Please explain why whilst you are only too happy to criticise Israel at every conceivable opportunity you have never uttered one word of condemnation at the far bigger
loss of innocent Arab lives that have occured in Libya and Syria, not to mention Yemen, Egypt and Iraq where the Arabs murder innocent Arab civilians almost daily.
If you were genuine in your concern for innocent Arab civilians you would not restrict your criticism to that of Israel but would criticise the murder of innocent Arabs by other Arabs.
That you choose to only criticise Israel (the only Jewish country in the world) shows you up in your true light!

Of course plenty of people were put off visiting Brighton today because of the planned demo by Rentamob,do they really think that the government will be concerned by their actions.
What will be affected is the loss of business to local traders who are already facing serious losses who must be really upset that our Green Council have openly encouraged demos.
SmashEDO, on this occasion, published the exact details of the route and stuck to it precisely so that people would not feel the need to avoid town today and disruption would be minimised. But of course in the Conservatives' never ending quest to score points over the Greens they are always willing to promote the occasional scare story even if it means frightening people away.

Some people here seem to forget the point of why Smash EDO exists. They do not exist to end all wars and bring world peace. The do not exist to destroy the Jewish state or bring Sharia law to the UK. They exist to stop the manufacture and export of arms and those who support the manufacture of arms in Brighton. EDO/ITT have a factory in Brighton which develops equipment that is used by the IDF to bomb civilians. The fact that is the IDF doing the bombing and not Assad or Ghadaffi really makes no difference. Don't you see the contradiction of your own opinions? Are you telling me you would protest against a local weapons factory that exported to Bahrain, Syria, etc. but somehow Israel is a special case?

Arms manufacture is a reality globally and nothing you say or do will rectify that.
As somebody else said in an earlier posting, the Russian AK47 has killed more people worldwide than any weapon made anywhere else in the world.
There is nobody in Brighton & Hove who has any influence on arms manufacture or export so if you are really sincere in your beliefs, take your protests to the seat of government. Or would that deprive you of a jolly to the seaside?

loss of innocent Arab lives that have occured in Libya and Syria,Yemen, Egypt and Iraq where the Arabs murder innocent Arab civilians almost daily.
If they were genuine in their concern for innocent Arab civilians they would not restrict their criticism to that of Israel but would criticise the murder of ALL innocent Arabs by everyone including other Arabs.
That they are selective and choose to only criticise Israel (the only Jewish country in the world) shows them up in their true light!”

Some will always say "why aren't people protesting about Tibet, Burma, Syria, etc" (the list is long). The fact is that these issues have mainstream support because they are not on the whole against the interests of the West or the status quo (whatever the rights and wrongs of that). Or they may be campaigns that have already been fought and won having been condemned in much the same way while they were actually being fought.
The whole point of protesting is to attempt to get issues into the mainstream that are very often deliberately excluded by the media and the establishment. It's usually as simple as that.
For example, I know that some of the SmashEDO people were holding vigils in solidarity with the Syrian people when the conflict started and was being ignored by the media. It's now all over the news so there is no point campaigning in the same way to get it into public conciousness. Although the more recent story of the coverage and the West's response to the situation is a whole new can of worms...

Normally certain marches are dealt with in a certain way. The countless posts of "Right Wing Fascists", wasting tax payers money etc etc. Yet here we see a March (heavily policed because i was in Brighton yesterday) on The Jubilee Weekend and suddenly, with some, it is ok.
As for comments about the UAF and EDL, most arrests are from the UAF.

Its all about being heard isnt it..nobody likes their weekends disrupted.. I dont like it anymore than anybody else, particularly when fascists want to march through the city, but we live in a democracy, where protest is a bit of a right....at least they had a legitimate protest, whereas, EDL/Casuals specifically came to Brighton in sort of 'revenge' on Brighton for the hostile reception they recieved last time they visited.

Of course out of the thousands that attend EDL protests, the media will put up pictures of the tattoed blokes, they are hardly going to put up pictures of the Rabbi, the Pakistani Christian, or the Sikh co leader of the EDL, when they speak at these rallies are they.
Perhaps a look at the members, the footage, and funding of the UAF, might shed a different light on this "organisation".
