Furious Royal Mail customers have contacted The Argus to complain about late deliveries.

Last week we launched our Sort It Out campaign to put pressure on mail bosses to im-prove deliveries in Brighton.

On Tuesday long queues snaked out of the North Road sorting office as customers tried to claim their parcels.

Some complained they had waited for weeks for important packages to arrive.

One irate customer described the Royal Mail service as “diabolical” since cost-cutting changes were made at the North Road sorting office last month.

The man, who wished to remain nameless, lives in an apartment block only two minutes walk from the depot.

He said: “It has gotten so bad we have stopped ordering online as the parcels either don’t turn up or take weeks. It is almost as if they are saving up parcels as we don’t receive any for a few days and then they all arrive at once.

A postie told The Argus that the North Road depot was in “chaos”. The whistleblower said cutbacks had left workers demoralised and changes to working practices made it impossible for deliveries to be made on time.

A Royal Mail spokeswoman claimed that delays had only affected the North Road office “last week” and said all the mail had been delivered over the weekend.

But residents have continued to contact The Argus to say their delayed mail has still not arrived. One said: “Despite the Royal Mail promise that the parcels would be delivered by last Saturday – mine hasn’t come yet.”

Dr Peter Lloyd, 84, complained he only had two deliveries to his home in Withdean Lane last week.

He said: “I was invited to a medical conference for Age UK and I missed it because the letter came too late.”

A Royal Mail spokeswoman said: “We sincerely apologise for the slight delay in the delivery of mail in parts of Brighton last week. We can confirm that all the mail has now been delivered and we will continue to monitor the new arrangements to ensure that we provide the high level of service expected by our customers.”
