Brighton community garden work continues

Work on a new community garden has continued - despite activists being told it would be destroyed.

Those behind the former community-owned plot in Lewes Road, Brighton, came together in January to take over a new site known as The Mound.

But they feared they would be forced off the prime plot, which is next to the Earth and Stars pub in Brighton city centre, after the agents placed a sign on its fence.

The group of about ten guerrilla gardeners confirmed they remained on site all day on Friday without opposition from the owners Worthing-based Hargreaves Property.

A spokesman for the group said a van did drive past but no action was taken.

I have walked past this eyesore for a lot of years now. It has a steel type corrugated fence around it. This plot of land has stood empty for so many years now. Well done to the people wanting to, make this site look nice. Shame on those, who have done nothing with it for years.

I believe the owners are trying to develope the site but have some planning problems. I dont see the problem with allowing the locals to use this eyesore as an open space while it is empty, as long as they dont forget that it is private property and they must peacefully move on when the planning issues have been resolved and building can start.

Nice idea but lessons have probably been learnt from all of the aggro that happened at the Lewes Road site...why would any land owner agree to let people open a community garden after that nightmare??

Rather than leaving the garden at the agreed time, those that overstayed their welcome at Lewes Rd have probably ruined what could have been a great community initiative.

I agree; the Lewes Road site looks a lot better now there's something there.
