New sites looked at for Brighton O

New sites are being investigated for a £6million ferris wheel after plans to install it on Brighton seafront collapsed.

Paramount Attractions withdrew their application for the 60m tall "Brighton O" hours before it was expected to be rejected by Brighton and Hove City Council's planning committee today.

The company said it had been unable to resolve concerns raised by neighbours about its planned site by the Old Paddling Pool, opposite the Hilton Metropole hotel in King's Road, Brighton.

A spokeswoman said Paramount was now looking into alternative sites on the city's seafront and still hoped to have the attraction installed this year.

She said: "Our proposal has met with overwhelming support from businesses within the city, who recognise the tremendous economic boost that our attraction will bring.

"It has also been welcomed by local residents and the conservation advisory group, which includes English Heritage, voted in favour of it. So, when the new site is agreed, we will be able to move forward very quickly.”

The council's planning officers had recommended the plans should be turned down by the committee today because its site cut into the space allocated for the 150m i360 viewing tower, already approved for construction at the land end of the derelict West Pier.

Where do you think the Brighton O should go? Tell us below.

What would Paul Elgood say if he woke up and saw it in Brunswick Square?

How about Black Rock, before it gets filled with something else? Nice views of the marina's attractive concrete outer walls...

under the water perhaps so we dont have to look at it. Brighton doesn't need any more visitors does it? It's doing just fine as it is. The awful spike thing is going to bad enough. I personally love the view along the sea front... un-interrupted by dross. Build another pier by all means but not this wannabe Eye or Spinnaker. Keep it Brighton!

Breaking news over here is that Fatboy Slim and Zoe Ball think that it would add something to the beach in front of their place. This would certainly provide people with a good view of the goods yard and skip dump on the other side of it. But perhaps Paul Elgood would be miffed at such plans to snaffle the Big O from Brunswick Square and innovative, leading edge plans to hold Councillors' "surgeries" in the spinning vessels.

Yep Peter Pan is a good idea, maybe a bit closer to the Pier. Apart from the Volks Railway there is not much over there.

pavillion gardens perhaps, or east of the brighton pier seems the most obvious for space and regeneration. hopefully all this might spur on the i360 and the black rock ice rink.

One of those people that doesn't like progress. I guess the rides at the end of the Brighton Pier are great to look at are they? It's about progress, the seafront is looking like a **** hole and yes Brighton does need it, then other investors will invest in other projects making Brighton great once more. What we don't need is Starbucks, Tesco, Sainsbury, McDonalds, Burger King benefit scroungers and druggies.

I'd put it to the east of the palace pier, maybe close to yellowwave.

wingers are forgetting brighton is a seaside city relyant on tourists for most of its economy, so we need this and I do not think it looks tacky at all, compared to the brighton pier and west street amusements. brighton is seriously going to lag behind and become famous for extortionate parking charges and nothing else, and other resorts will steel brightons developments. i also find it amazing that such lousy naff 60s style blocks of flats are allowed to go up everywhere liking us to crawley and milton keynes yet anything unusual and exciting gets quashed.

Yep,Brighton seems to struggle with anything new that doesn't have a gay dimension to it,and the area suffers because of it.I think you mean whingers though.

How sad that some people are so negative about this fabulous wheel. I think it is wonderful and will really enhance any part of the seafront. How about midway between the piers? Hope it is built real soon- and spurs the i360 into action too.
