West Pier 'recreated' for one night only

Brighton’s iconic West Pier is set to be restored to its former glory – but for one night only.

Technical wizards say they will recreate the pier in ghost form by using green lasers on top of its skeletal remains as part of a promotion for Tiger Beer.

French lighting studio Creatmosphere will use computer-controlled lasers for the project, which comes as The Grand Old Lady had its concert hall remains removed from the beach this week.

Two videos shot by a passer by of a test run which took place last month have been placed on YouTube. Julia Claxton, who shot the first one, joked the "West Pier seemed to be communicating an extra-terrestial message". In this one, you can see both the technicians at work, and the effect on the West Pier about two minutes in:

A Pier Appears takes place on Wednesday between 6pm and 10pm and is the first of a number of events commissioned by the beer company to mark Chinese New Year.

Brighton’s event represents water, an element featured in the Chinese zodiac.

Brighton & Hove Council should pull out all the stops for this to remain a permanent attraction for this run-down area of the sea-front. I bet it would be much more welcome than more attempts at putting up a ferris wheel

B&H council can't manage to pull out one stop let alone all of them. I believe their preferred approach is to spend lots of cash consulting on the value of pulling the stop, writing letters to the stop concerned seeking it's view on the matter (which is then ignored), disagreeing about the best way to pull the stop, deciding the stop should, in fact, be pushed rather than pulled and then, finally, breaking the stop while pushing and pulling it at the same time via a paper chain made of 50 pound notes.

Oh, and this looks quite cool. Will go take a look but they better not plaster Tiger Beer across it

lets keep the skeleton lit this will be a great attraction and fitting for a city like brighton and hove. the pavillion should also be coloured lit for certain occassions, green for halloween red for valentine pink for pride etc. we have so many festivals that this could be great. come on bhcc show some artistic license and less of your bureaucratic licence for a change.

Sounds like a great idea, at least original unlike the fairground attractions. The two videos are rubbish. The second shows nothing of the pier!

Oh it looks wonderful!! Why can't this be a permanent feature? It would be fab sitting down on the beach at sunset in the summer, watching the sun go down, and the birds flocking, and then just as it starts to get too dark, the old west pier illuminate and come 'alive' again!

Are all the above posters stupid?

How much do you think the lasers and computer equipment cost to do this?

I hate to say it but B&HC will only bugger up this freebe by sending out more parking Tax collectors on the night to make sure they get as much as they can from this and won't care a toss about it either

I saw this the other day, it was really good but I don't see how it is returning the pier to its former glory, how do flashing green lights make it look like a fully functioning Victorian pier?
