£3m funding bid to boost Brighton's i360 project

A bid for £3 million funding for the i360 has been submitted to the Coast to Capital Local Enterprise Partnership (LEP) Growing Places fund by Brighton and Hove City Council.

The Government gave Coast to Capital’s Growing Places Fund the green light in February and increased the allocation to £16,024.526 from £15,083,882.

The funding is for “shovel ready” projects which had been given planning permission but stalled since the credit crunch hit bank lending.

If the bid is successful the council will lend money to the i360 to begin building work.

Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council Bill Randall said: “The council would see a financial benefit if this goes ahead. This would create about 180 jobs. It’s also in an area of the city that does need regeneration.”

The i360 is the brainchild of London architect Marks Barfield.

David Marks, boss at the firm, said: “It’s a bit early to pop the champagne corks but it is a step in the right direction. We welcome the development. We are all working extremely hard to make this a reality.”

Millionaire businessman Mike Holland recently shelved his alternative plans to rebuild the West Pier.

He called for a referendum on the future of the West Pier and the Brighton i360.

He said: “Anything positive is a great move and perhaps it takes such a move from Brighton and Hove City Council to ensure that something really will happen.

“However, if the council has £3 million to spend why are they not simply putting it towards a new pier by placing a compulsory purchase order on our pier in the same way that Hastings council have on theirs? I do ask myself a couple of questions.

“What is the significance of £3 million to a structure costing some £36 million and why would the council be happy to just leave the West Pier Trust sitting there, doing nothing about a new pier when that was precisely what they were set up for?

“While it is good to see something positive happening, my concern is that we do something achievable and something that the people of this city really want – I would love to see a referendum in place, let the people who live and work here vote for what they want.”

More consultants, more meetings, more fat fees. Ad infinitum.

Let Mike Holland deal with it. The Council and the West Pier Trust will just drag this out for years and it will never happen.
Mind you, with the cost of parking in B&H now, who will want to come will be another thing entirely.

Having read the story it seems the company need to borrow the first £3million to even get this off the ground. where then is the next £33million going to come from?

'Shovel ready'?! Who came up with that phrase, lol?
Mike Holland is an idiot: the council don't have £3 million to spend, they are applying for it... He's got alot of publicity out of those so-called 'shelved plans', hasn't he...shame the money was never there...

"shovel ready" agreed, stupid phrase.

£3m point. I think he is very aware that council dont have £3m but the point is IF they get the 3m why doesnt it go to regen the pier rather than to the i360

And he makes a very good about the other 33m not being there.....even IF they 3m is forthcoming

Now I've no idea what his plans for pier are or what funding is or isnt in place. Why dont we find out dear Argus ? After all the only thing this article tells us for 100% certain is that 90% of the required budget for i360 does not, in fact, exist. And the other 10% only MIGHT exist

And referendum - why not. Pier or 1360 ? Why shouldnt we have a say

This is potentially great news. Anything will be better than Holland's pier on the cheap (could those plans have been knocked up for any less money??). Brighton & Hove deserves a great attraction in the absence of a fully re-created West Pier. The i360 will fulfill this dream, and it is not the West Pier's nor the i360 architect's fault that getting finances in place has been frustratingly difficult. Holland's so-called 'vision' is for a copy of someone else's pier constructed at the lowest cost so he can profit......we deserve better.

I assume the bid for the £3m will only be successful if the other £33m is available. Since there is no sign of the spades it looks unlikely that there will ever be the money to finish this project. But why does the council have to loan the £3m if the bid is successful?

great idea but with an anti tourist council and planning department living in the 1980s, what is the point in one project trying to bring us into the 21st century. seaside citys all over the world are zooming ahead in 21st century planning of buildings and roads and economy, amateur Greens are taking this city back 50 years.
